Jahrhunderts nach. Nach einer Einführung in das historische Umfeld und die Geschichte der Handschrift beschreibt sie den berühmten Psalter im Detail: Kodikologie, Inhalt, Schrift, Buchschmuck, Texte, Rezeption. - "Ein Psalter vom heiligen Bischof Bernward mit eigener Hand geschrieben", so lauten die Worte, die Johannes Jacke, Abt von St. Michael in Hildesheim, im Jahre 1615 in den Bernward-Psalter eintrug, um diesen einer Berührungsreliquie gleichzustellen. Zwar hat der 1192/93 heilig gesprochene Bernward von Hildesheim (um 960?1022) das Buch nicht selbst geschrieben, gleichwohl scheute der bedeutende Kirchenmann aber keine Kosten und Mühen und nahm wahrscheinlich großen Einfluss auf die Gestaltung des Psalters. Aus Regensburg ließ er den begabten Diakon Guntbald nach Hildesheim kommen. Dieser Schreiber und Initialenmaler gestaltete den Psalter als Teil einer Gruppe liturgischer Handschriften, von denen noch insgesamt vier erhalten sind. Auch die Form der zusätzlich in den Psalter aufgenommenen Texte für das Chor- und Stundengebet lassen auf das direkte Einwirken Bernwards schließen. Doch für wen war die mit gold- und silberfarbenen Schmuckinitialen ausgestattete Kostbarkeit ursprünglich bestimmt? Handelt es sich gar um das private Gebetbuch des Bischofs, der dem Chor- und Psalmgebet sehr zugetan war? Die Texte der Handschrift lassen eher auf eine andere Funktion und auf eine bewegte Geschichte schließen. - Der Psalter Bischof Bernwards von Hildesheim ist eine über 1000 Jahre alte Handschrift, die ursprünglich aus dem Hildesheimer Kloster St. Michael stammt. Sie enthält in erster Linie den lateinischen Text der 150 Psalmen, von denen allerdings aufgrund von Blattverlust einige fehlen. Der Bischof ließ das Buch von dem Kalligraphen Guntbald auf Pergament schreiben und mit zahlreichen kunstvollen Initialen verzieren, um es nach Fertigstellung dem Kloster zu schenken. Dort verblieb der Psalter, bis er vor etwa 200 Jahren in Privatbesitz gelangte. Abgesehen von einer Präsentation 1993 im Dommuseum Hildesheim blieb das wertvolle Psalmen-Buch seither der Öffentlichkeit vorenthalten. Dies änderte sich 2007 mit dem Ankauf des mit Gold, Silber und farbigen Tinten verzierten Buches für die Herzog August Bibliothek. 112 Seiten mit 43 Farbabb., broschiert (Patrimonia; Band 343/Harrassowitz Verlag 2012).
