It reflects the mutual misunderstandings of Americans and Europeans, often by following the same basic pattern, i.e. the innocent and naive American girl who journeys to the Old Country and encounters a corrupt, mostly rigid set of values which its advocates attempt to subjugate her to. Usually the heroine struggles to protect her integrity, her individualism and personal freedom against a society that strikes her as oppressive, anti-democratic or, as is the case with Madame de Mauves, as immoral, and undergoes a changing process in which she abandons her romantic vision and nostalgic longing for a quaint and picturesque Europe. Although in his exploration of the international conflict ¿innocence¿ is invariably associated with the American side, whereas ¿knowledge¿ is mostly to be found on the European, the satire and irony in the study of national characters is aimed at both. Sometimes showing sympathy for the helpless American outsider abroad, who is not at all prepared to deal with the complexity of cultural life in Europe, James at other times sympathizes with the European facing the uncultivated, socially ignorant and traditionless American (of which Daisy Miller¿s mother seems to be the representative model), thus giving us an all in all tremendously balanced and superb portrayal of the idiosyncratic manners of both sides of the Atlantic. I have selected three early ¿tales¿, as James called them, which I am going to examine - in chronological order - with regard to the question of how the ¿international theme¿ manifests itself in them, focussing on the different codes of conduct pertaining to America and the respective European country where the story is set, as well as the characters¿ inherent traits as far as they are relevant of the ¿type¿ James wished to illustrate. The tales I have chosen are "Madame de Mauves", "Daisy Miller" and "An International Episode". All quotes referring to either one of these stories are indicated in brackets in the text of this essay.

Authentische Texte seien motivationsfördernder als ihre didaktisch aufbereiteten Gegenstücke in den traditionellen Lehrwerken, ein authentischer situativer Kontext gilt mittlerweile fast als ein Muss, um Schüler adäquat auf den 'Ernstfall' realer Sprachanwendung mit einem native speaker vorzubereiten, authentische soziale Interaktionen als notwendig, um die Sprachkompetenz aufzubauen. Fast kein Lehrer gestaltet heutzutage guten Gewissens seinen Unterricht, ohne zumindest punktuell etwas von dem einzusetzen, dem gemeinhin der Stempel authentisch aufgedrückt wird. Hier kommen vielerlei Pressetexte genauso zur Anwendung wie Gedichte, Werbung, Aufzeichnungen von Radio- und Fernsehprogrammen, sowie dem oft bemühten Koffer voller Realien, welcher von der Tafel Cadburys über Walkers Crisps bis hin zu Earl Grey Tea eben jene Gegenstände enthält, die besonders häufig mit dem Partnerland assoziiert werden. Das Problem, was denn nun eigentlich die Klassifikation 'authentisch' verdient, wird in dieser Arbeit ebenso thematisiert wie die Bedeutung von Authentizität für das autonome Lernen und die Frage ob, wie und in welchem Maße sie unterrichtlich verwirklicht werden kann. Hier bietet sich eine nähere Betrachtung des bilingualen Unterrichts an, dem sehr häufig attestiert wird, dass er durch seine Struktur und Inhalte eben jene Forderung nach Authentizität der Kommunikation und der Materialien erfüllt. Ob und mit welchen Mitteln er das tut bzw. welche Probleme dabei auftreten können, wird im Folgenden untersuchet. Dabei werden sowohl grundlegende Techniken im Umgang mit authentischen Lernmaterialien vorgestellt als auch wird der Frage nachgegangen, inwieweit sich unvermeidbare Faktoren wie eine Bewertung der schülerischen Leistungen oder die Korrektur von Fehlern auf Authentizität auswirken.

Es sind Figuren, deren Existenz sich innerhalb des gesellschaftlichen Spannungsverhältnisses entzweit, und die in eine moralisch gute, idealistische und altruistisch gesinnte Hälfte auf der einen sowie eine in bürgerlichen Ansichten verhaftete, ökonomisch handelnde, egoistische Hälfte auf der anderen Seite zerfällt. Alle drei jedoch fungieren als Repräsentanten der veränderbaren und zu verändernden Welt, in welcher das Scheitern des Individuums gleichsam als eine Kritik am 'kapitalistischen System' aufgefasst werden kann, die im gleichen Atemzug die Ablösung des status quo durch den Sozialismus fordert. Die Heroinen sind diejenigen, die innerhalb dieser Verhältnisse zu überleben versuchen (Courage), als moralischer Werteträger Güte spenden (Shen Te) oder eben jene Einsichten in das System gewinnen, die zum Handeln gegen die eigenen idealistischen Grundsätze auffordern und die Person in einen Widerstreit mit sich selbst stürzen (Johanna).Diese Arbeit enthüllt das 'faustische Element' in den einzelnen Charakteren, die Motive ihres Handelns sowie die Ursachen und Folgen ihres Zwiespalts vor dem Hintergrund des jeweiligen gesellschaftlichen Kontexts.
