Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Poor. This is an account of the Origin of the East India Company's Civil Service and of their College in Hertfordshire. The brown cloth covered boards are shelf worn and the spine is stained and damaged at the top. There is gilt titling on the spine and front board along with the crest, as well as gilding…on the top edge. The boards remain well attached although the gutter cracks show binding. It is an ex library copy with all the usual marks and stamps. There are 3 fold out plans at the end in almost pristine condition and there are illustrations throughout the book, often sepia photographs. There its a comprehensive index. xxvii, 668pp . This is a lovely reading copy, but we have only labelled it as such because of the spine. The general impression is better. We only supply photos of our actual books - never stock pictures. Should you require further photos please ask. This is a book where the packaged weight or size may incur extra postage depending on where it is to be sent.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating history of the East India Company's Civil Service, exploring the evolution of its recruitment and training practices. From its origins in the 16th century, when "Factors" were appointed by the Company's Adventurers, to the establishment of the Hai…leybury College in the early 19th century, the author traces the changing landscape of the Company's administration in India. The book examines the motivations behind the decision to establish Haileybury, including concerns about the suitability of young men for life in India and the desire for a more systematic and rigorous training program. The author analyzes the different stages of the selection process, the qualifications demanded of candidates, and the changing nature of the Civil Service over time. Through an examination of the historical documents and the personal reminiscences of individuals involved, the author provides a rich and insightful account of this unique institution. The book provides a valuable perspective on the evolution of colonial administration and the educational systems developed to prepare British civil servants for their roles in India. It offers a glimpse into the complex dynamics of power, patronage, and education that shaped the East India Company's empire. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of public health measures, particularly those related to sanitation, for the rural poor in the mid-19th century. The author, a medical doctor, argues that despite significant advances in urban sanitation and healthcare, the rural poor were lar…gely neglected, leading to widespread suffering and poverty. The book examines the historical context of public health and welfare provision, highlighting the role of religious institutions and the aristocracy in providing limited support in the past. It also discusses the economic and social factors that contributed to the poor health of rural communities, including inadequate nutrition, lack of access to clean water, and poor housing conditions. The author proposes a comprehensive system of public health measures to address these issues, including the establishment of rural health districts, the provision of free medical care for the poor, and the promotion of public health education. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of public health, the plight of the rural poor, and the role of government in addressing health disparities This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Poor. Around the World in Eighty Days. By Jules Verne, Author of "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea." Translated by Geo M. Towle and N. d'Anvers. Author's Illustrated Edition. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington. 1876, Author's Copyright Edition. Early British, 6 plates (including frontisp…iece, complete), 192 p + 16 p adverts, decorated cloth binding measuring 7.5 x 5", 8vo. In poor condition. As is. Illustrated cloth boards scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Head and tail of spine collapsed & worn. Gilt lettering on front board overall bright and clean; gilt lettering on spine moderately dulled and soiled. All edges of text-block are gilt (dulled). Front and rear gutters split with exposed binding. Water or tea dampness staining found on front and rear paste-downs and end-pages; mostly likely the cause of foxing throughout text-block. Top corner of plate adjacent to page 31 lacking. Toning and some age-staining present. Binding is intact, but very fragile. Perfect candidate for restoration. Jules Gabriel Verne (1828 1905) was a French novelist, poet, and playwright. His collaboration with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel led to the creation of the Voyages extraordinaires, a series of bestselling adventure novels including Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas (1870), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1872). His novels, always well documented, are generally set in the second half of the 19th century, taking into account the technological advances of the time. Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington were one of the most prolific publishers of Jules Verne in the English language. They were an "authorized" publisher, being given that title by J Hetzel et Cie. They published numerous editions and sets of Jules Verne books. Author's copyright/illustrated edition.
