      Half-Leather. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. Three volumes copiously illustrated in black and white and in colour. Translated by M. Edwardes with an introduction by Grace Rhys Volume I (179pp) covers 1790 to 1817; volume II (164pp) 1818 to 1842; and volume III (157pp) 1843 to 1878. Contemporary half-leather binding with marbled boards. The spine has all the title panels and five raised bands and decorations. The boards have some light surface wear and marking with some rubbing and a little fraying to the corners. Gilt page edges are quite bright. The frontispiece and tissue paper from Vol. I is unfortunately detached but the pages are otherwise clean and unmarked. First printing. Heavy item due to the three volumes so there will be an additional postage charge for overseas orders.

IN A FINE COSWAY BINDING. 3 vols., 8-9/16" x 6-1/4", illustrated, each volume with 4 inlaid miniature portraits for a total of 12 portraits by Currie, bound in full teal morocco, ribbed gilt decorated spines, covers ruled and paneled in gilt, floral gilt decorations to front covers, white silk morie pastedowns and endpapers, top edges gilt, others uncut, each housed in their original open ended slipcases, by Riviere & Son for J. H. Stonehouse, lower edge of rear cover stamped "Miniatures C. by Currie". Spines slightly sunned, 5 hinges expertly repaired, slipcases a bit scuffed and worn, overall a quite elaborate example of Riviere and Currie's work. The "Currie" refers to Miss C.B. Currie (Caroline Billin Curry, 1849-1940), a British book illuminator known for her miniature portraits on book covers and fore-edge paintings. She worked for the bookshop Henry Sotheran & Co. and is famous for her work with the binder Riviere & Son.

First published in English in 1909, this is the revised and enlarged second edition. Volume I is illustrated with forty colour plates; volume II with thirty-six; volume III with thirty-two; and volume IV with thirty-two, alongside further vignette and full page monochrome images. Collated, complete. An exhaustive study of the changes in fashion from 1790 to 1914, from the modes of the French Revolution to the simplicity of the modern sporting kit. With detailed commentary on the relationship between politics and clothes, history and manners, scientific invention and the growth of democracy. Volume I covers the period from 1790 to 1817, volume II covers 1818 to 1842, volume III covers 1843 to 1878, and volume IV covers 1879 to 1914. From the German of Oskar Fischel, a German art historian and Max von Boehn, a German officer and art historian. Translated by M. Edwardes. With an introduction by Grace Rhys, an Irish writer. In the original green cloth binding. Externally, very smart with minor wear to the extremities only. Original unclipped dust wrappers are sound with light wear and the odd small closed tear to the extremities. Minor sunning to the spine with the odd small mark. Light loss to the head and tail of the spines with further loss to the tail of the spine of volume four. A 1" closed tear to the front panel of volume three and a large closed tear across the panel of volume four sympathetically repaired with tape to the internal side. Internally, firmly bound. [iv] + 157 pp. Illustrated with approximately 82 Coloured plates some of which are hand-coloured, and numerous fine illustrations throughout. Finely bound in uniform salmon pink half morocco gilt, spines with raised bands and compartments delicately tooled in gilt with flower motifs and titles lettered in gilt. Very slightly rubbed on extremities, but a fine set bound by Sotheran and Co., with the original watered silk covers preserved on the front and rear paste-down. Classic work which reproduces many of the finest illustrations which were printed in the time span covered by these volumes. The wealth of illustration and the scholarly text have become much respected source of knowledge on the 19th century.
