Condizione: New. 2004 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1961). SB. xvx + 559pp with 25 maps and sketches in colour and numerous contemporary photos.Published Price £45 This third volume in the series of five in the 18-volume official British History of the Second World War which recount the war against Japan, has, in the words of… its authors â a brighter tale to tellâ than the previous two - which narrated the disastrous losses of Hong Kong, Borneo, Malaya, Singapore and Burma. By late 1943 the tide of war in the Far East was turning, and the Allied High Command in the theatre under Lord Louis Mountbatten, began detailed plans to reverse Japanâs conquests. At sea, from bases in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) the Royal Navy mounted raids on Java and Sumatra. In the air, flying from bases in India, the RAF challenged Japanâs air supremacy. Above all, on the ground Allied armies stemmed Japanâs attacks on Arakan and Assam, and decisively defeated them at the battles of Kohima and Imphal. The conventional Allied armies were supported by the celebrated âChinditâ special forces trained by the colourful General Orde Wingate to operate behind Japanese lines, though the authors play down their achievement and criticise their campaigns as âwastefulâ. The book also describes parallel military developments in China and the Pacific which affected the campaigns in India and Burma. There are 30 appendices with details of the forces and logistics involved, and the book is illustrated with 15 main maps, 20 sketch maps, and 57 photographs.

Condizione: New. 2021 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1954). xxv + 506pp with 30 maps and diagrams.and numerous contemporary photos.Published Price £45 The first of eight volumes in the 18-volume official British History of the Second World War covering the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern theatres. After setting the political…and military scene, the authors open the action with Italyâs declaration of war and Franceâs collapse in June 1940. Britainâs painful neutralisation of the French fleet at Oran and Alexandria is followed by the first blows against the Italian empire in East Africa, and Italyâs attacks on Egypt and Greece. The Fleet Air Armâs triumphant attack on the Italian Fleet at Taranto, masterminded by Admiral Cunningham, is trumped by General Wavellâs even more successful Battle of Sidi Barrani in December, when vast numbers of Italians were captured for negligible British losses. The victory was followed up by Britainâs capture of Bardia and Tobruk, and the founding of the Long Range Desert Group - the germ of the SAS. The mopping-up of Genertal Grazianiâs forces in Cyrenaica, however, ominiously resulted in Germanyâs decision to rescue their ally with General Rommelâs Afrika Korps. However, the volume concludes optimistically with the successful campaign against Italy in Ethiopia, in which General Orde Wingateâs irregular Gideon Force plays a prominent part. The military narrative is accompanied by descriptions of diplomatic developments and technological innovations such as the arrival of the Hurricane fighter plane, the Matilda tank and radar. The text is accompanied by ten appendices, 30 maps and diagrams and 43 photographs. We have taken the opportunity with our 2021 editions of the OFFICIAL HISTORY OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR â" UNITED KINGDOM MILITARY series to redesign the covers and print on 140g silk paper.

Condizione: New. 2020 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1958). SB. xvii + 541pp with 35 maps and sketches in colour, and numerous contemporary photos.Published Price £453 This, the second of the five books in the 18-volume official British History of the Second World War dealing with the war against Japan, examines the high tide…of Japanâs success, when her all-conquering armies threatened India itself - the jewel in the crown of the British Empire. The book opens with the British scrambling to defend Burma, gateway to India, after Japanâs onslaught on Hong Kong, Borneo, Malaya and Singapore. Within weeks of Japan attacking Burma in December 1941, its capital, Rangoon, was lost and Britain was forced to look to Indiaâs defences. Despite a punishing monsoon climate and inhospitable jungle terrain, the British grimly held on to north-east India after the loss of Burma, and even made plans to hit back. The book looks at the controversial early campaigns of the Chindits, the guerrilla force conceived by the maverick and eccentric General Orde Wingate, a favourite oif Churchillâs, and features two more conventional Generals who fell foul of the Prime Minister - Archibald Wavell and Claude Auchinleck. Supported by 33 appendices, 15 main maps and 20 sketch maps; the book is illustrated by 35 photographs.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, spine and strips of front and back jacket slightly faded, corners very slightly bruised, not price clipped (no published price), no inscriptions, intern…ally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 365pp, illustrated. Many of the most famous escapes in history took place during the Second World War. These daring flights from Nazi occupied Europe would never have been possible but for the assistance of a hitherto secret British service: MI9. This small, dedicated and endlessly inventive team gave hope to the men who had fallen into enemy hands, and aid to resistance fighters in occupied territory. It sent money, maps, clothes, compasses, even hacksaws and in return coded letters from the prisoner of war camps and provided invaluable news of what was happening in the enemy s homeland. Understaffed and under resourced, MI9 nonetheless made a terrific contribution to the Allied war effort. As a young subaltern in the Coldstream Guards, James Maydon Langley (1916-83), lost his arm at Dunkirk and was captured but eventually escaped via Lille, Paris, Marseilles, Spain and Gibraltar. He describes the fierce fighting outside Dunkirk, his captivity, escape and extraordinary life in Vichy France, before the Germans controlled it. His fellow escapees and the French who sheltered them make a rich cast of characters. On return to London, Langley is recruited into the Secret Service and told to organise the safe return of allied soldiers, sailors and airmen who had succeeded in either escaping from or evading the Germans. Despite betrayal and infiltration from Germans, collaborators and traitors, over 3000 men were safely brought back to 'fight another day'. Langley and Airey Neave, who joined him after his historic home run from Colditz, had to wrestle with rival secret organisations for resources to carry out their vital work. Langley was portrayed by the actor Benedict Cumberbatch in the 2004 BBC series Dunkirk. Michael Richard Daniell Foot CBE, TD (1919-2012), was a British military historian and former British Army intelligence officer and special operations operative. Jacket by Michael Harvey (illustratore).

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. A symbol of the end of British Empire, and emergence of modern Singapore and Malaysia. Original cream card wraps blue printed with 48 Squadron's emblem 19x26cm. (8)pp with b/w photos, with (1)pp detailing amendments to proceedings laid in. Very good, creased, with marks to the wraps. Following…the Japanese surrender, 48 Squadron moved to Changi on Singapore in 1946. From here it flew transport services to Rangoon and Hong Kong, performed air drops to remote jungle forts and outposts during the Malayan Emergency, supplied the Far East Land Forces, and participated in the suppression of the Brunei Revolt. RAF Changi's Station Commander was at this time Group Captain J.E.P. Thompson, and 48 Squadron's Commander Wing Commander J.M. Crowley. In 1967 Britain announced it would be withdrawing its forces from the region. 48 Squadron was out by October with the base handed over to Singapore. Most of the other British forces were out by 1971, with a token presence to 1976. This contains a history of 48 Squadron, the Order of Ceremony, biography of Reviewing Officer Air Marshal Sir Rochford Hughes, Air Commander of the Far East Air Forces (FEAF), decorations won during the two World Wars, aircraft flown from 1917 (Bristol fighters) to 1957-67 (Hastings), and notification of the Service for Handing over of the Squadron's standard. The apology laid in informs that Hughes is unable to attend, and has been replaced at short notice by Air Vice Marshal I.J. Spencer, identifying him as Air OIC Administration and Air Officer Commanding FEAF HQ Group, and giving his service record.

Soft cover. Condizione: Fair. An unusual and wide-ranging insight into life and work at RAF Khormaksar, the RAF's biggest Staging Post to Singapore and Australia, and soon to become its busiest ever Station during the Aden Emergency. Programme in original colour wraps 21x26cm, individually numbered "2258" to p32. Printed by East… African Standard Ltd, Nairobi. 64pp with full-page b/w map, full-page b/w plan, b/w photos and local adverts throughout. Laid in is a photocopy of the plan on a slightly larger scale. Fair only, with blue ink bleeding to the wraps and several page edges though with minimal impact on content. Nevertheless extremely rare with Worldcat and Library Hub recording only one institutional copy of a 1962 edition between them (OCLC 1088536221: Exeter University). Hosted by permission of Station Commander Group Captain J.R.H. Merifield, the Open Day was held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund, and repay the hospitality shown by residents in the Colony and Protectorates (Merifield's Foreword). This public relations work thus contains sections on the RAF Benevolent Fund (Air Marshal S.C. Elsworthy, Commander-in-Chief, British Forces, Arabian Peninsula); RAF Khormaksar's role (Merifield); its Wing Commanders; its role as a Staging Post (Wing Commander ABJ Pearson); the Army's Air Despatch Unit; 8, 37, 84, 233, 5004 Airfield Construction Branch Squadrons; air traffic control; aircraft in the flying display; family welfare (Mrs Merifield); children's education; Aden Forces Broadcasting Association; Khormaksar and Aden; recent visitors (including Lord Mountbatten); the Aden Protectorate Levies; leisure; and the Battle of Britain. The Programme lists 23 events involving diverse aircraft including a sonic bang, low photographic reconnaissance runs, a helicopter dingy rescue to the sound of the Blue Danube, paras loaded on to a Blackburn Beverley, numerous fly-pasts and landings and other activities giving insight into hardware and operations. Music was provided by the Military Band and Corps of Drums. Amusements organised by Squadrons and other groups included treasure hunts and other games. The map is of Arabia and Africa with an inset for Aden Colony. The plan shows the Station's layout with event structures and toilets distinguished as of European or non-European type reflecting the diverse population. Among the advertisers are Aden Airways, oil (Standard Vacuum, BP, Shell), banks (Grindlays, Chartered, Bank of India), shipping, etc.
