Joseph Chiari was born in Corsica, and wrote primarily in French, his second language. These later poems, composed in English, were the fruit of his time studying in Scotland, where he befriended the poet Hugh MacDiarmid, and, as he remarks in his prolegomenon to the present volume, also illumined by a lifelong affinity he felt the English language, which. Chiari also counted T.S. Eliot among his friends, his biography of whom is perhaps his best known work. This volume is drawn from five collections:, and., which are reproduced in their entirety. T.S.
