The material at hand is well known. The majority of Hittite sculptures consists of rock reliefs of limited scope, at best abbreviations of friezes (e.g. the worship scenes at Fraktin and Gavurkalesi) or symmetrical and frontal, hierarchic con-structions (like Iflatun Pmar). The more elaborate sculptural evidence comes from Bogazköy and Alaca Hüyük. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Dr. Wolfram Kleiss, langjährigem Leiter der Außenstelle Teheran des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts. - In 1976 the number of active excavation campaigns was smaller than in previous years, but study, conservation, and publication proceeded. An impressive survey of the field of Anatolian archaeology was given in the papers presented to the VIIIth Congress of the Turkish Historical Society in Ankara, October 1976. Excavations and studies of materials from the Palaeolithic to Byzantine periods came up for discussion; surveys and explorations have begun to fill in areas hitherto blank on our archaeological maps; history and philology have made strides (e.g. with the first presentation of the Masat excavations by Prof. Tahsin Özgüc and the Hittite tablets by Prof. Sedat Alp); classical archaeology was well represented with detailed studies of sculpture and pottery; classical epigraphy still had its traditional, well-deserved emphasis; and in general the active contribution of the youngest generation of Turkish academic archaeologists, museum curators, excavators, and explorers was outstanding. The warm hospitality at the headquarters of the Turk Tarih Kurumu and at a number of official receptions remains a vivid memory; the record of the papers as it will appear in the Proceedings of the Congress will be a document of progress in Anatolian archaeology, in conjunction with the parallel sections in Central Asiatic studies, Ottoman history, and modern Turkish history. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Dr. Wolfram Kleiss, langjährigem Leiter der Außenstelle Teheran des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts. - In 1978, notable discoveries were made in all periods of Anatolian prehistory and history, but the main record is that of hard and solid work at the established sites. In Anatolia, a pragmatic symbiosis of old, new and "touristic" archaeology is developing as demanded by the complexity of the cultural remains. At Cayönü in the upper Tigris area, where the Chicago-Istanbul expedition resumed its work in search of an early food-producing community, much attention had to be directed to the rich architectural tradition of the inhabitants. At a small site of Early Bronze Age and Chalcolithic date, Demirci Hüyük in the Phrygian-Bithynian borderland, a fortified station of the type of Troy I was studied in modern analytical detail, with gratifying results of excavation on a bold scale. At Ikiz-tepe on the lower Halys, a prehistoric site of Pontic character is revealing its affinities to SE Europe. Acemhöyük, a serious contender for the name of Burushanda, in addition to its glyptic wealth produced a painted bathtub of the 18th century B.C. with a pictorial repertoire otherwise unsuspected for the earliest Hittite period. The tablets from Masat begin to yield their historical and geographical information, with a sudden breakthrough in the location of several Hittite towns and rivers. At Bogazköy, the newly opened area in the upper city promises important new architectural evidence. The problems of the Iron Age are under scrutiny by excavators and study teams. The strength of Iron Age settlements is noticeable not just in western Phrygia, but also in the formerly Hittite coreland (Bogazköy, Alaca Hüyük, notably also at Eskiyapar) and at Masat, where the energetic building activities of the Iron Age settlers damaged earlier buildings, and where the pottery has a blend of Phrygian and Pontic inspiration. At Sardis, the Lydian fortifications promise to furnish clues to the main substance of the pre-Persian town. In the classical, Hellenistic and Roman realm, steady and logistically spectacular work is continuing at Pergamon and Ephesus. At Pergamon, the centenary of the excavations was celebrated on September 9, 1978. As a surprise result of emergency digging, the potters' district of Pergamon came to light. The work in Pamphylia is developing Perge into a showpiece of Hellenistic-Roman urbanism. At Seleucia, the discovery of a mosaic with portraits of philosophers and other men of letters confirms the cultural ambitions of the residents of these South Anatolian towns in Roman times. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Dr. Wolfram Kleiss, langjährigem Leiter der Außenstelle Teheran des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts. Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - The discovery of two painted tombs in the plain of Elmali, recently visited by the honored recipient of this volume and discussed by him on that occasion, direct one's thoughts toward the problem of the continuity of the art of wall painting in ancient Anatolia and its relationships to the art of its neighbors, specifically to Greek painting. Anatolia has spectacular early examples of wall painting from the neolithic town at Catal Hüyük, which seem, to contain reminiscences of even earlier, perhaps Palaeolithic art. The paintings of Qatal Hüyük are done in a simple technique of native colors on a white background covering the mud plaster of mudbrick walls1. Once the art of wall decoration was established in Anatolia c. 6000 B. C, it is unlikely to have been given up as a form of ornamental treatment of architecture and meaningful design in domestic (or, as the case may be, ritual, sacred, ceremonial, palatial) environment. The preservation of the paintings is fragmentary and uneven due to the condition of the limestone surface to which they were applied. The surface had been smoothed with a flat chisel which left ridges between strokes, leaving each block with a corrugated finish. The joints between blocks in many instances were bevelled slightly. The preparation of the walls was ideal for the application of a plaster coat which would have covered the masonry joints and which would have adhered well to the ridged surface of the blocks.
