Gebunden. Condizione: Gut. Gebraucht - Gut Zustand: Gut, XXI, 312 p. 55 illus. About this book: Solitons were discovered by John Scott Russel in 1834, and have interested scientists and mathematicians ever since. They have been the subject of a large body of research in a wide variety of fields of physics and mathematics, not to mention engineering and other branches of science such as biology. This volume comprises the written versions of the talks presented at a workshop held at Queen's University in 1997, an interdisciplinary meeting wherein top researchers from many fields could meet, interact, and exchange ideas. Topics covered include mathematical and numerical aspects of solitons, as well as applications of solitons to nuclear and particle physics, cosmology, and condensed-matter physics. The book should be of interest to researchers in any field in which solitons are encountered. Written for physicists, applied mathematicians, graduate students.…

Aggiungi al carrelloCOMPLETE FIVE VOLUME SET. All hardcover, H 19.25cm x L 13cm, in half-leather bindings - leather spines and marbled paper boards with leather corners. Leather spines have some surface abrasions and furrows as well as light white staining along with scuffing wear at ends; (Vol. II with some separation between spine leather and underlying back-strip descending from head of front joint); some rubbing to boards with slender wear to corners. All edges marbled but with top edges darkened. Marbled endpapers. Each volume's title page states "August, 1819-Aug., 1824." although this set's Library of Congress catalog summary specifies content as "Papers which appeared in Blackwood's magazine from March 1822 to February 1835." Each volume features an 1874-1875 bookseller ticket "Cleaves & Carnes, | Booksellers & Stationers, | No. 283 Main Street, | Near cor. Madison, Memphis, Tenn," affixed at top left of their respective ffep versos. Foxing strongest on initial and rear leaves but with varied occurrences to interiors. A few stress points to bindings but all still reasonably firm. Volumes I, III, IV, and V have frontispieces with tissue guard sheets; no evidence of a frontis ever being present in Volume II - i.e. no stub nor slight gap between ffly verso and title page. *** VOLUME I - 1867. i-xxxii, 1-486 pages. Off-white Cleaves & Carnes ticket. Text leads off with "Preface to the Revised Edition of 1863." *** VOLUME II - 1867. i-xxxvi, 1-432 pages. Dark pink Cleaves & Carnes ticket. *** VOLUME III -1866. i-xvi, 1-469 pages. Aquamarine Cleaves & Carnes ticket. *** VOLUME IV -1866. i-xxii, 1-468 pages. Aquamarine Cleaves & Carnes ticket. *** VOLUME V - 1866. i-xii, 1-465 pages. Off-white Cleaves & Carnes ticket. *** Calvin C. Cleaves (?-1866) was, according to his obituary upon his passing from cholera, a bookseller in Memphis for nearly thirty years lending credence to a start date of circa 1840. The 1867/68 Halpin city directory for Memphis cites the firm as Cleaves & Smithwick but by 1870 the firm was Cleaves, Smithwick, & Hatcher. The Cleaves & Carnes combination (for son E.L. Cleaves and Samuel T. Carnes) seems to have been short-lived as it is only cited in the 1874 Boyle-Chapman and Edwards directories; by the 1876 Boyle-Chapman directory the firm is listed just as E.L. Cleaves. Please note that this set has an approximate shipping weight of 7.5 pounds (3.4 kg) and may require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.…
