First edition, first impression, of the author's first detective novel, introducing his long-serving Inspector Appleby. In the publisher's note, the reader's attention is drawn to the rear folding plate, designed so that the plan of St Anthony's College can always be in view as one reads through the text. An immediate success, the book was followed by a series of over fifty detective stories centered on Appleby. Stewart wrote: "I would describe some of them as on the frontier between the detective story and fantasy; they have a somewhat 'literary' flavour but their values remain those of melodrama and not of fiction proper" (quoted in ODNB).
