Aggiungi al carrello4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with discoloration from tape at head of second leaf. Watts's handwriting is not easily legible. The male recipient of the letter is not named. In reply to a letter received the previous Friday, Watts assures him that 'the earnest desire of Mrs. Watts and myself' is…'to promote by every means in our power the comfort and happiness of your daughter, and we are not without hope that we shall succeed in achieving what we wish.' Watts will be in London the following Thursday and Friday, 'and can, without the slightest inconvenience wait upon you in Trafalgar Square at any hour (morning or evening) that you may be the most likely to be disengaged'. He has 'promised to dine with the Royal Marines at Chatham on Saturday'. The letter ends with a discussion of the 'medium of conveyance' for certain 'articles of furniture', with Watts stating, 'I should wish Miss V. to bring any thing of the kind that she may desire to bring. There is not the shadow of an objection'. A line under the signature is illegible. Included with this item is a worn copy of the original engraved portrait of Watts (by Daniel Maclise), captioned 'The Editor of "The Literary Souvenir"', from Fraser's Magazine, June 1835.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. [TRAVEL]. Sir Alexander Burnes (1805-1841). Artwork by Edward Francis Finden (1791-1857), Daniel Maclise (1806-1870), Jose M. Gonsalves (fl.1815-1830), Louis Haghe (1806-1885), William Day (1797-1845), James Rattray (1818-1854), and H. Wade, et al. "Cabool: Being a Personal Narrat…ive of a Journey to, and Residence in That City, in the Years 1836, 7, and 8. With Numerous Illustrations [First Edition]." London: John Murray, Albemarle Street. Printed by William Clowes and Sons in Stamford Street, London, 1842. First edition. English language. Original publisher's boards with blind-paneled green diaper-grain cloth boards lettered gilt on a spine in six blind-banded compartments with yellow endpapers and tissue guards for most plates. A gorgeously illustrated early nonfiction European travelogue to Afghanistan, prescient in the sense that its Scottish author died on a colonialist trip there, with tinted frontispiece, title, dedication, preface, ToC, eleven chapters with head summaries, six appendices, erratum leaf, and eight pages of publisher's ads dated April 1842 bound-in at rear. Illustrated with twelve plates including six tinted lithographs, one of which is on India paper and mounted, a steel-engraved portrait of the author, and two folding plates, which are complemented by at least six in-text woodcuts, numerous tables, lists, ledgers, a poem, and graphs. 8vo. Binding: 9 x 6 inches. Paper: 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches. 28 oz. xii, 398, [2], 8 pp of ads. 12 plates. Former USC Pacific Asia Museum Library copy with ownership stamp on front flyleaf, and discard stamps on flyleaf, title, and dedication, rest clean. Shelf-wear. Board corners rubbed. "June" in contemporary ink manuscript on title above date. Minor staining. Break in back endpapers along hinge strengthened with Japanese tissue. Text clean. Collated complete. Very Good. References: Buckland, 'Dictionary of Indian Biography.' Jones, 'Annotated Bibliography of Nuristan' 53. Lunt, 'Bokhara Burnes.' OCLC: 7415868. Riddick 75. Wilber, 'Annotated Bibliography of Afghanistan' 532. Yakushi B303. "'Bokhara Burnes,' a relative of the Scottish poet Robert Burns, joined the East India Company as a teenager, and learned Hindustani and Persian while serving as an interpreter. He climbed the ladder in the Company and then in service of the British Army, eventually traveling through the Hindu Kush to modern-day Uzbekistan and Iran. He published a best-selling narrative of his journeys, 'Travels to Bokhara,' and was awarded a medal by the Royal Geographical Society. Burnes returned to India as a diplomat before precipitating colonial intrigue in Afghanistan as part of 'The Great Game,' where he was then assassinated prior to the first Anglo-Afghan War, but only after killing six assailants. 'Cabool,' a 'casual and informal account of life at Kabul,' in which Burnes gives 'geographical, agricultural, political, and linguistic information' that 'exceed usual interest' describes his second journey to Afghanistan from 1836-1838 and was posthumously published. [Wilber, Jones, Riddick]".
