The years covered are 1842 and 1843; and the central subject is inevitably Dickens in relation to America.JanuarytoJune 1842 covers his first visit there, the adulation which greeted him, the alteration in his feeling for the country and the country's for him (much use is made, in the annotation, of American newspaper comment). The results are seen in American Notes and the American chapters of Martin Chuzlewit. Later interests are reflected in A Christmas Carol, published at the end of 1843. In the autumn, hard pressed for money, he decides to remove himself and family to Italy in 1844. This volume presents 706 letters (250 of them unpublished) for the years 1840 and 1841, which saw the publication of The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge within the framework of Master Humphrey's Clock. The letters mark the progress of his work, and the manuscripts of the two novels have been drawn on to clarify his many references to them. Before the volume ends Dickens had been recognized by many as a master of pathos, had been lionised in Edinburgh, and could dictate terms to his publishers. His circle of close friends had widened to include Macready, Macuse, Landor and Lord Jeffrey. The Volume ends on the eve of his departure for America. Thanks to his later holocausts oniy a few scattered letters to Dickens himself have survived-except for the year 1841. But 125 letters of that year he deposited with his solicitor on leaving England, and then forgot. This volume draws extensively on these letters in its notes. The impact he made on his friends is revealed, and simultaneously they emerge as people in their own right.
