Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book provides the first complete treatise on the fortifications of cities from the Italian Renaissance. The author was a military engineer and mathematician who advised numerous city-states on the design of their defenses, including Florence, Milan, and Urbino. The first three books describe the principles of fortification, including the siting, design, and construction of walls, towers, and other fortifications. The fourth book is a detailed description of siege warfare, including the construction of siege engines and the methods of attack and defense. The author's work is illustrated with numerous woodcuts, including plans and elevations of fortifications and siege engines. This book is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the history of fortification and military engineering or in the history of Renaissance Italy. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. …

Jungermanni. Accedit appendix virorum illustrium, idem argumentum pertractantium. Editio novissima aucta, emendata, & figuris aeneis exornata. Amsterdam, Andreas Frisius, 1664, [16] ff. n. ch. Aggiungi al carrelloSoftcover. Condizione: Good. Folio (36 cm), contemporary limp vellum (a bit creased and spotted) with remains of the original ties at boards and some worming at inner side of boards; internally a light waterstain to the lower corner, but generally a very genuine copy, clean and with wide margins. Bookplate at pastedown. Woodcut heading at title, with woodcut device, repeated at end, ff. (4), 139, (1), almost completely illustrated with 115 woodcuts (44 full-page, 15 double-page), depicting plans and views of fortifications and illustrations of battle formations. First edition. Girolamo Maggi (Anghiari c. 1523-Constantinople 1572) after graduating in Pisa in 1546, began to deal with military technique, always maintaining a close intertwining of interests between humanistic erudition and technical-mathematical sciences. In the early 1560s he settled in Venice, becoming a military engineer for the Serenissima, and from May 1570 he worked in Cyprus on the fortification of Nicosia and then of Famagusta, after whose fall he was captured by the Turks in August 1571, and eventually strangled during his imprisonment in Constantinople in March 1572. Giacomo Castriotto (1510-1563), from a noble family from Urbino, following his marriage with a descendant of Scandenbeg, took the surname of Castriotto, then even replaced his own. He worked as a military engineer in the Kingdom of Naples, in the Papal States under popes Paul III and Julius III, and then, from the mid-1550s, in the service of Henry II in France, where he reached the rank of General Superintendent of the Fortresses of the Kingdom. Girolamo Maggi in 1564, a year after the death of Castriotto, published the present treatise (in the third are treated the water fortifications - the Venetian fortresses "da mar"). Mortimer Harvard It. n. 266; Ayala p. 90; Cockle 772; Riccardi I/1°, col. 299-300. …

Notes: Little is known about the Italian scholar Girolamo Maggi (c. 1523-1572). The information available primarily derives from his own works. His most important work, Della fortificatione delle città (Venice, R. Borgominieri, 1564), made him famous among his contemporaries. As a consequence, Maggi was designated as a military engineer for the Republic of Venice. In 1570, he was sent to Cyprus, where he fell into Turkish captivity after the fall of Famagusta. During his captivity, he managed to write two works: "De Tintinnabulis", a treatise on bells, and "De Equuleo", concerning an instrument of torture. Both manuscripts were brought to the West by chance. They were first published in Hanau in 1608 (De tintinnabulis) and 1609 (De equuleo). Maggi attempted to purchase his freedom numerous times, although unsuccessfully. This likely prompted an endeavour to escape, which proved to be unsuccessful. He was captured and presumably executed via strangulation on 27th March 1572. …

[4] + 139 + [1]f. Roman & italic letter. Printer's device on title and last leaf. With 115 woodcuts (44 full-page, 15 double-page); 31 pages contain woodcut and typographical illustrations of battle formations; 9 large ornamental woodcut head-pieces, a few other ornaments, and numerous historiated and arabesque woodcut initials. 17th century calf with marbled end papers; compartments of spine richly ornamented in gilt; morocco title label. First edition of this collection of five early works on military architecture and fortification edited by Girolamo Maggi (c1523-72), a writer from Anghiari, Arezzo. The principal author is Giacomo Castriotto (born Iacopo Fusto (1510-63), a military architect from Urbino with long experience of warfare in Italy and France. His treatise on the fortified towns in France was based on his own experience in constructing redoubts for the French government. Castriotto's concept of a new system of communications with ring-roads and of a central square featuring a public building anticipates modern town planning. Page 52 contains a full-page illustration of an ideal town. Included are Francesco Montemellino's observations on the fortifications of Rome which had been criticized by Castriotto. The treatise by Giovacchino da Coniano is illustated with letter diagrams showing battle formations, cavalry and cannon. The printer's dedications are to Count Eugenio Sinclitico, governor of Cyprus, and to Philip II of Spain. A light waterstain running through inner top corners of first quires; a small wormhole running through blank tail corners; some occasional light toning, leaf 108 repaired without loss, but generally a good copy of this profusely illustrated volume; early presentation inscription in tailend blank title margin ('Carlo Morel dono dedit .'
