Der deutsch-amerikanische Literaturwissenschaftler Prof. Dr. Hans Albert Maier (1910-1995) ist heute als Goethe-Spezialist und durch seine kommentierte Edition des West-Östlichen Divan (1965) sowie Hermann Brochs Bergroman (1969) bekannt. Leitbild war für ihn aber schon früh Thomas Mann und dessen 'militanter Humanismus'. Seit 1933 in der Schweiz, wo er 1938 in Bern bei Fritz Strich mit einer Dissertation zum Dritten Humanismus bei Stefan George und Thomas Mann promoviert wurde, und ab 1939 in den USA, erhielt er 1947, protegiert von Thomas Mann, eine Lebensstellung an der University of Connecticut. Vom Doktor Faustus (1947) mit der Absage des Helden an den Humanismus tief enttäuscht, schrieb Maier 1948 erst eine 'Ergänzung' zu seiner Dissertation und versuchte noch 1956/57 in einem Aufsatz die Zauberberg-Studie (1933) des Kollegen Hermann J. Weigand (Yale) als Inspiration für den Faustus-Roman nachzuweisen. Die beiden Fassungen dieses Aufsatzes blieben zwar liegen, aber Maier verfügte eine posthume Edition. Sie liegt hier vor und bietet zudem Maiers übersehene Artikel zu Thomas Mann aus den Schweizer Jahren 1935 bis 1938 und seine Briefwechsel mit Karl Kerényi, Thomas Mann und Hermann J.
