Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 356pp. Historical account of America during the mid 19th Century, seen through the eyes of a top-ranked military official. Greely served with Company B, 19th Massachusetts Volunteers during the Civil War. He wrote of his experiences with African American units, battles in which he fought and political and social observations viewed during his life. Greely was most famous as the leader of the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition in the Arctic from 1881 to 1884 Of Greely's 25-man crew, 19 perished from starvation, drowning, hypothermia, and in one case, gunshot wounds from an execution ordered by Greely. Greely and the other survivors were themselves near death; one of the survivors died on the homeward journey. The returning survivors were venerated as heroes, though the heroism was tainted by sensational accusations of cannibalism during the remaining days of low food. Greely received the Medal of Honor. First edition. Small blemish on front cover, very light rubbing to tips of spine and corners, otherwise a very good copy. Not in Dornbush.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition. The text is solid, good. The dust jacket has a piece 1/4 x 1, roughly, torn out of frront top edge. 3/4 tear from top of spine. The jacket is very readable, and 90 years old. I worked this out, it was quite expensive in its day, at $4.00. Price is on the flap. It seems the book is rare, and even more rare with a dust jacket. There is also a map of the polar region in the back, in perfect condition. From what I see, this is the best copy available of a very rare book!
