Rawlinson (1864-1925) had just taken command of the IV Corps in France, seeing them suffer heavy losses at Ypres during 18-27 October. On 28 October he was recalled briefly to oversee preparation of the 8th Division, leaving Douglas Haig in charge. He returned in November, by which time the attacks on Ypres had died down. This lecture was thus part of his effort to ready the 8th Division for action. RAK Montgomery (1848-1931) compiled these notes whilst serving with Rawlinson during October 1914. Drawing on the instructions of Duke Albrecht of Wurtemberg which had been found on the body of a German or a prisoner, experiences in South Africa and more recently against Germany, this presents lessons in trench warfare, reconnaissance, dealing with artillery, German spies, snipers, etc. It includes Rawlinson's introduction, discussion, and closing remarks.
