Makechnie had his first contact with Boston University in 1923, when his high school submaster recommended that he consider the University. He matriculated in 1925, and thus embarked on a lifelong affiliation. -- Makechnie rose through the ranks of University administration from assistant to the dean of the School of Education ( 1929-1933), to registrar and director of undergraduate studies at the School of Education (1934-1945), to professor of education (1943-1945), and ultimately to dean of Sargent College (1945 1972) and acting dean at the School for the Arts (1959-1961). His retirement in 1972 only lasted a few months, and soon he was back to work on Optimal Health: The Quest A History of Sargent College. Today Makechnie presides over the Howard Thurman Center at Boston University, which he established in 1986. As an extension of his work at the center, Makechnie published Howard Thurman: His Enduring Dream in 1989. -- It is fitting that Dean Makechnie, a prolific writer throughout his career, should record his memories of the people and events that shaped Boston University in the twentieth century. As President John Silber observed in a letter to Makechnie, Transformations: A History of Boston University relates the facts, but your memoirs will supply the texture, the feel of the facts.
