This copy is in near fine condition bound in burgundy cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine and the upper board where there is also a blind thistle device. This copy is bright, tight, white and square There are some typical rubs and bumps to the extremities. There is a pencilled signature to the f.e.p. and a stamp of the issuing bookseller (Paterson, Sons & Co. Glasgow) A dustwrapper is not called for. This copy is from the seventh edition which is undated however the attractive tissue guarded frontispiece 'Proud Maisie' is by Frederick Sandys. The drawing is one of a series that Sandys made in 1867, each of which is known by the title Proud Maisie, and which was inspired by Walter Scott's poem Proud Maisie. Cramer and co. in c.1890.In the publisher's original brown cloth, with a frontispiece of 'Proud Maisie' by pre-Raphaelite painter Frederick Sandys. Contains many pages of sheet music and an original advertisement leaf at the rear.Macleod and Boulton wished to bring to the public a variety of traditional Scottish melodies that are less well-known to the public, using both Lowland and Highland dialects. Songs include those with lyrics written by Robert Crawford, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns. In the publisher's original brown cloth. Externally, smart, with the odd mark to the extremities, including three marks to right edge of front board. Slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Minor rubbing to the front joint and edgewear. Slight offsetting to the free end paper, and the odd faint spot to paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Contemporary full red morocco; the boards with double-ruled gilt borders incorporating heraldic lion devices to the corners and with central gilt crest of the city of Glasgow to each board; the spine with five raised bands, compartments double-ruled in gilt, and with lion devices and titles in gilt. Gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Illustrated with 21 mounted black and white plates, including a frontispiece after a drawing by Edward Burne-Jones. pp. [12], 202, + plates and 1pp. of publisher's advertisements to the rear. A good copy, the binding with cracking to the hinges at the front and rear (albeit remaining secure), wear to the corners, rubbing to the joints, and a few small scuffs and marks to the spine and boards. The contents with a previous owner's ink inscription (dated 1932) to the front free endpaper verso, the front free endpaper coming a little loose, the following blank and/or half-title page apparently excised, toning to page edges, and occasional light foxing, are otherwise in good order.
