(Baksidestext:) "För hundra år sedan (1888) föddes Carl Malmsten, möbelarkitekt och pedagog. Hans första framgån…gar kom tidigt: han vann 1916 både första och andra pris i en tävling om möbler till Stockholms stadshus. Därefter fick han flera stora inredningsuppdrag, bland dem Stockholms konserthus, Svenska Tändsticksaktiebolagets huvudkontor i Stockholm, och det vardagsrum på Ulriksdals slott som stockholmarna skänkte som bröllopsgåva till kronprins Gustav Adolf och kronprinsessan Louise. Under första hälften av 1900-talet var de stora utställningarna viktiga för alla som sysslade med konsthantverk och konstindustri. Där visade man vad man kunde åstadkomma. Framgångsrikt deltog Carl Malmsten i de flesta utställningarna, Hemutställningen 1917, Göteborgsutställningen 1923, Parisutställningen 1925, Stockholmsutställningen 1930. Under denna tid hade han också flera separatutställningar. Hans möbler omgavs då alltid av Märta Måås- Fjetterströms gobelänger, draperier och mattor. 1930, året för den stora Stockholmsutställningen, bröt en häftig debatt ut. Gregor Paulsson, verkställande direktör för Svenska slöjdföreningen, förespråkade de nya idéerna - funktionalismen. Hans antagonist var Carl Malmsten, som försvarade traditionen och hantverket mot ingenjörskonsten och maskintillverkningen. 30-talets purism gick emellertid inte spårlöst förbi ens Carl Malmsten. Också hans former blev enklare, även om den intarsia som han stundom smyckade sina möbler med blev ännu rikare. Under 40- och 50-talen ritade han de möbler som han i dag kanske är mest känd för, med genomtänkta former, alltid bekväma, praktiska och omsorgsfullt gjorda. Sin tro på traditionen och hantverkets betydelse höll han alltid levande". - - - (Böcker om konst.).
