Maltitz (1794 - 1837) "bereitete sich für das Forstfach vor, unterbrach jedoch, als im J. 1813 Preußens Erhebung gegen Frankreich stattfand, seine Studien und trat, obschon er körperlich gebrechlich und mißgestaltet war, als Husar in das Heer ein. . Bevor er um das J. 1824 seinen Wohnsitz in Berlin nahm, machte er seinen eigenen Angaben zufolge eine Reise nach Italien: indessen, da man wußte, in welchem Maße ihn seine Phantasie beherrschte, und in seinen Schilderungen aus Italien auffällige Unrichtigkeiten entdeckte, glaubte man sich berechtigt, diese seine Angaben in Zweifel zu ziehen. In Berlin schrieb v. M. einige dramatische Dichtungen. Mehrere seiner Stücke, . wurden dort nicht ohne Beifall aufgeführt. Aber eines derselben. "Der alte Student" (Hamburg 1828), welches die polnischen Freiheitsbestrebungen verherrlichte und Stellen enthielt, welche die Censur beanstandete, ward dadurch, daß es aufgeführt ward, ohne daß die beanstandeten Stellen wegblieben, Ursache, daß er aus Berlin ausgewiesen wurde und den Aufenthalt im preußischen Staate, an dem er mit Liebe hing und für dessen deutschen Beruf er voller Begeisterung war, während seines übrigen Lebens mied. Er ließ sich zunächst in Hamburg nieder und redigirte hier den "Norddeutschen Courier, ein Zeitblatt für Männer" (3 Jahrgänge, Hamburg 1829?31), eine Zeitschrift, welche von ihrem Verleger als die "freisinnigste" bezeichnet wird, "die in Deutschland erscheint". Mit edlem Eifer, an Vorbildern wie Hutten und Seume sich begeisternd, wirkte er mit den Mitteln poetischer Publicistik für deutsche Einheit und Freiheit. Seine eigenen Beiträge zum "Courier" wurden von ihm gesammelt unter dem Titel "Pfefferkörner" (4 Heftlein, Hamburg 1832 - 1834) veröffentlicht. Die Julirevolution veranlaßte ihn sich nach Paris zu begeben. Aber enttäuscht kehrte er bald von dort nach Deutschland zurück und wählte,|nachdem er kurze Zeit in Karlsruhe und Stuttgart verweilt, als Aufenthaltsort Dresden, wo er sein Leben beschloß.
