Aggiungi al carrelloFolding map with outline colour, full page plate showing an old Chinese document with chops in red, 5 plates at rear with 35 black and white line and photographic illustrations showing costume, ornament and tools. 72pp including tables of anthropological measurements (7 pages) and a List of Yögur words (10 pages) at rear. Very l…ight even browning at margins. Bound in attractive unlettered patterned paper covered boards. Very pleasing copy. Scarce. Finnish noble, stateman and military officer Carl Gustav Emil Mannerheim's career led him more than once into Central Asia. In an expedition into Central Asia and Northern China between 1906 and 1908 he spent time among the Sarò and Shera Yögur peoples. These extracts from his journal include a vocabulary of words noted down in parallel with Classic Mogolian making up the third column. In the introductory note Mannerheim, who also had a long career in the Imperial Russian army, notes that "the principal aim of my expedition lay altogether outside the spheres of anthropology and ethnography" an oblique reference to the journey's real purpose to collect intelligence on behalf of the Russian court.
