Nicola Petruzzellis ci ha dato alcune delle opere più vive ed appassionate, come Critica dell'inautentico e Il metro della libertà, proprio nei tempi più difficili, che del resto non si può mai dire che siano finiti, attraversati dall'Università e dalla politica italiana, quando pareva, specie tra il 1968 e il 1976, che potessero avere partita vinta quei terribles simplificateurs della vita sociale di cui un secolo fa, e con accento profetico, parlava Jacob Burckhardt. Quando non già solo i rapporti tradizionali, che la ragione è sempre pronta a discutere e anche, se necessario, a mutare profondamente, tra maestro e discepoli, padri e figli, vecchi e giovani, sembravano venir sovvertiti in maniera assurda, populistica e scervellata, ma purtroppo i Valori stessi della vita, il Bene e il Bello, il Vero e l'Utile vennero sottoposti alla più brutale delle negazioni, alla più sfacciata delle irrisioni, e soprattutto alla più aberrante delle confusioni, Petruzzellis fu tra gli happy few, non dimentichiamolo, che non perdettero la testa, che non si piegarono né al turbine della tempesta né alle ventate maliziose dell'opportunismo accademico e seppero coraggiosamente pagare di persona. Naturalmente anche a lui è poi toccato il prevedibile destino di tutti i saggi, quello cioè, una volta passato il peggio, di venire immediatamente dimenticati e soprattutto superati nella corsa o rincorsa del favore dei potenti da quella numerosa schiera di nostri concittadini, anche illustri, che è sempre pronta a difenderci dai pericoli quando questi sono sicuramente passati.
