There are 35 plates of fossils. ***Content: This is Mantell's first (and some consider his most important) geological monograph, noteworthy for its descriptions and splendid illustrations of fossils from Cretaceous and Tertiary strata, particularly from the Chalk. The engravings were executed by Mrs. Mantell, from drawings by the author. Dean (1998, p. 52) notes that copies like this one originally sold for three guineas. ***Condition: This is a VG copy in contemporary 3/4 calf, with marbled boards and page edges, and a gilt-lettered maroon leather spine label. The covers are well preserved, but with moderate rubbing; spine scuffed, but the title label is complete and has bold, bright gilt lettering. Joints and hinges expertly reinforced and now solid; binding very firm. Save for mild offsetting to the title page from the adjacent frontispiece plate, the text pages are pristine: fresh, clean and bright. The exquisite plates of scenery, strata and fossils are very clean and bright, with only minor foxing to the edges of a few plates. No evidence of previous ownership.
