Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 10.5 x 13.5 . Caligraphic handwritten title and 58 numbered manuscript pages, complete. Marbled endpapers. Paper is watermarked Otto y Arzoz Vergara 12 Mexico (Arzoz was a prominent Mexican music publishing and supply house in the early 20th century). Occasional pencil corrections and additions, including some fingering notations and other minor performance notations. Early 20th century embossed green cloth, title on front board gilt but much of it rubbed away. Leather spine. Very good.        Ponce s Concierto, a masterwork in the romantic style written in 1910 and first performed in 1912, ranks among his greatest compositions, along with his Concierto del Sur for guitar and orchestra, which premiered in Uruguay in 1941 with Segovia on the guitar. Ponce is especially remembered as one of the first composers to bring the guitar into classical music. His song Estrellita (Little Star) was an international popular hit and his best-known composition.         One of the sources consulted by Carlos Balam Vazquez for his master's thesis on this composition (University of North Texas, 2007) was a copy of a two piano reduction of Ponce s Concierto, archived at the National School of Music in Mexico City. That reduction, containing no reference to either the date of its creation or who created it, has long been attributed to Carlos Vazquez (namesake of the thesis writer), a major Mexican composer and Ponce s student, who collected and donated to the school the majority of Ponce s letters, writings and scores. However, [quote]: Vazquez recently noted that he has never written a piano reduction of the concerto, and he believes it was Ponce himself who transcribed it. It is possible that Vazquez was referring to an earlier two-piano reduction, an unpublished score which Rodrigo Herrera lists as being written for a concert in 1921, the date of composition and current status of which is unknown. [unquote] (Page 39-40).         Perhaps the present manuscript version is the unlocated score to which Herrera and Vazquez were referring, transcribed by Ponce himself. It is intriguing that this score has been professionally bound. It may have been put to use for concerts, which Ponce himself performed over many years. A sheet with press reviews in German of Polish pianist Severin Eisenberger was found laid in to the book. Ponce's original orchestra manuscript has later corrections to the first measure. In the present reduction, the first measure likewise has some of the original notes scratched out, and a few pencil notes inserted. Apparently this change was made to better match the piano with the orchestra.
