Manuel da Nóbrega (Sanfins do Douro, 1517 - Rio de Janeiro, 1570), padre da Companhia de Jesus, depois de estudar na Universidade de Coimbra, partiu para o Brasil como missionário, em 1549. Foi uma das figuras mais marcantes e influentes do início da História do Brasil, participou na fundação das cidades de Salvador, Recife, Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo, foi o 1.º Provincial da Companhia de Jesus no Brasil e pediu ao Rei a criação da 1.ª Diocese do Brasil, com o Bispo nomeado em 1552. Exerceu grande influência na luta contra a escravização dos índios e no ensino dos povos que habitavam o Brasil, sendo o primeiro a criar os aldeamentos para subtrair os índios aos abusos dos colonos.
