A obra, que teve uma segunda edição em 1704, destaca-se como um documento fundamental do período de transição entre o Renascimento e o Barroco em Portugal. O livro divide-se em três partes principais que abordam o resumo da arte de canto de órgão para a música polifónica, a suma da arte de cantochão para a música litúrgica e um tratado de explanações sobre regras de contraponto e teoria musical avançada. O texto original é acompanhado por gravuras pedagógicas como a Mão Guidoniana, um sistema de auxílio visual à solmização muito comum no ensino musical da época.
