Titles blocked to spine, rear board with only the blind stamped pattern. A printed map of England appears on the endpaper highlighted with a gold heart showing Warwarkshire area. A "Distance by Rail" feature in a starburst shape on the ffep., is also highlighted with gold. Frontispiece engraving of Kenilworth Castle appears opposite title page. Two fold-out maps detailing rail lines. and two smaller maps within text. **Contains a paginated 48pp." Black's Guide-book Advertiser" section (dated 1869) at the rear with "hotels in alphabetical order," and many charmingly engraved illustrations of the premises. Other useful travel products include Keating's Cough Lozenges and Insect Killing Powders, (hopefully not to be confused.) Hardback. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 379 pages; an errata page; four full-page maps, tracing the route; the author, accompanied by a friend, left London in July 1916 to tour France, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. He emphasizes in a preface that his habit was to quickly record his impressions at every stage of the tour in order give an accurate account. Book condition: Binding is quarter green leather with green leather wings at the corners, and green-white marbeled boards; cover corners and spine ends have some wear, bottom corners show a little board; front hinge is cracked and cover is off , rear hinge is cracked circa 1.5 inches at the top and is firm; spine has a horizontal crack at the 1.5 inch level previously mentioned, and spine title and decor is in gold; edges are dyed green; the text has foxing around and on the four route maps, rest of the text is either free of foxing or has some spotting. A label, 1.5 x 2.5 inches, ' Minster Acres Library', is inside the front cover. No other marks.

A pair of hand coloured engraved maps, 32 x 43 cms (maps including platemark), 38.2 x 52.3 cms (sheet), central folds, marginal age toning, scant spotting, small wormhole at the head of the second sheet chiefly affecting the border, but both in very good condition. A pair of highly detailed maps of India by the French Royal cartographer Rigobert Bonne (his predecessor was the eminent Jacques Nicolas Bellin). The first sheet shows the northern portion of the subcontinent, reaching from Kandahar (modern-day Afghanistan) in the west across northern India and Pakistan, and stretching east to Burma (Pegu) and the second encompasses Southern India (including Ceylon/Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia, and the East Indies (Maritime Southeast Asia). They feature critical coastal and marine navigation details typical of Bonne's scientific approach to mapping. A most attractive pair of maps.
