Published in 1916 just three years after the creation of the first zoning law in the United States, this plan provided the framework for the zoning of land use, height restrictions, and open space requirements for the city. Rooted in the idea that a well-planned city was vital to the public welfare, the author cites examples of haphazard construction and its effects on neighborhoods. The author presents a unique plan for dividing the city into designated districts, recommending restrictions to preserve residential neighborhoods and arguing for the segregation of industries into specific zones. The author makes a case for public regulation of building development and the importance of establishing quality-of-life standards for the city's inhabitants. The plan laid out in this book provided a model that would be adopted by cities across the United States. This book, published in the year 1916, offers an insight into the lives of British prisoners of war living in the Ruhleben camp during the First World War. It touches upon the construction of the camp and gives details of how its facilities and amenities were built by its occupants, including a school, a hospital, a theatre, and a general store. It also gives a glimpse into the intellectual and cultural interests of those incarcerated, such as sporting and music events, their Christmas pantomime performance, and the formation of a university, clubs, and societies. These details serve to illustrate how the prisoners made the most of their situation and found ways to maintain some normalcy. The book is particularly valuable as it was written at the time of the events it describes and provides a unique perspective on life in the camp during World War I. This book from the Pennsylvania Prison Society reviews the annual meeting of 1915, and provides an account of the Acting Committee's work throughout the year. The author focuses on the importance of prison visitation, parole, and the indeterminate sentence, discussing the benefits of each. The author also details this year's legislative successes in Pennsylvania, which included bills aimed at improving employment opportunities for incarcerated individuals. These legislative wins are then examined in the context of the broader debate on prison reform, with proponents arguing that they are a crucial step towards a more humane and effective penal system. The book concludes by exploring research conducted by the General Agent, which found that personal outreach to incarcerated individuals is associated with reduced recidivism.
