Ancora vivente, il M. fu nominato «eroe dell'elettricismo voltaico». In elettrofisiologia il M. studiò diversi fenomeni relativi alla contrazione muscolare e alle sensazioni, anche in rapporto a ricerche sui possibili usi terapeutici di scariche e correnti elettriche, soprattutto nelle paralisi, come risulta da dettagliati resoconti delle cure elettriche da lui stesso somministrate a numerosi pazienti. Lavorò in questi settori dal 1827 fino agli ultimi anni di vita. Nel primo scritto di elettrofisiologia, pubblicato nel 1828, si occupò del fenomeno osservato da L. Galvani e studiato poi da Volta anche con la corrente della pila: la contrazione dei muscoli di una gamba di rana percorsa da una corrente quando il circuito in cui è inserita viene improvvisamente interrotto. Volta l'aveva attribuita a un impulso di corrente retrograda nella pila posta ad alimentare il circuito, per effetto del brusco arresto della corrente. Il M. lo confutò, proponendo uno schema basato su proprietà direzionali da lui attribuite alla corrente. Una corrente elettropositiva può essere applicata ai muscoli o ai nervi e, nel secondo caso, in direzione concorde o discorde rispetto al loro verso di diramazione nei muscoli. Con la corrente applicata ai muscoli, il M. stabilì che la direzione di circolazione era ininfluente e che c'era sempre una risposta contrattile. Con la corrente applicata ai nervi concluse invece che le contrazioni avvenivano se la corrente era concorde rispetto alla loro diramazione nei muscoli e mancavano se era discorde. Distinse le due contrazioni, con stimolo elettrico sui muscoli o sui nervi, denominandole rispettivamente «idiopatiche» e «simpatiche». Considerò l'esperimento voltiano di contrazione all'interruzione del circuito nel solo caso di corrente iniziale discorde e pose come principio che la contrazione avviene in questa situazione «allorché il fluido elettrico cessa di invadere i nervi». Quanto alle sensazioni, stabilì che esse insorgono nei due differenti casi di corrente concorde interrotta nei nervi e di semplice applicazione a essi di una corrente discorde. Si confrontò su questioni elettrofisiologiche con C. Matteucci, J.-C.-A. Peltier e L. Nobili; alcuni risultati di quest'ultimo lo obbligarono a raffinare i propri schemi in una memoria del 1834 (anticipata in parte da una del 1828), ipotizzando che la contrazione muscolare osservata all'interruzione del circuito sia da attribuire a stimolazione dei nervi, causata da moto al loro interno di elettricità precedentemente «accumulata» e non più «tenuta ferma» dal flusso di corrente che prima li invadeva. Utilizzò spiegazioni simili per le «alternative voltiane», come scelse di chiamare un gruppo di fenomeni già studiati da Volta sulla perdita e riacquisto di reattività contrattile agli stimoli elettrici da parte di muscoli sottoposti per lungo tempo a correnti dirette e inverse" (D.B.I., s.v.)Ronalds 324, Rosetti-Cantoni 61.
