Full leather, and issued as one of the 100 greatest masterpieces of American literature. A superb and substantial introductory essay by T. S. Eliot, which was originally written in 1934, makes it essential for collectors. A fitting tribute to the great poet, it comes complete with the original enclosures. Heirloom standard book productions like this will grace any library. It certainly does justice to this fabulous poet's work. Acid proof paper, so it will last for a thousand years, and elegant typography that does justice to the words. The full leather binding is in deepest navy, with gilt titling and raised bands on the spine. There is a silk marker bound in, the pages are gilt edged, the end papers are in dark blue moire. Stunning indeed, this includes the Notes From The Editors, which is separately printed as a chap book. 0.0 0.0 0.0. Robert Parker (illustratore). …

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. First edition. Scarce first 1935 edition, with near fine volume and good dust jacket. For collectors of American modernism, few introductions would carry more weight that Eliot's early assessment of Moore's work. This volume, "Selected Poems of Marianne Moore, With an Introduction by T.S. Eliot," was published in 1935, early in Moore's career, well before she won the National Book award and other accolades that made her practically a household name in the 1960s. As Moore had a tendency to repeatedly revise her poems and republish them, owning this hard-to-find volume is a way to see her original intent for at least some of her later-reworked poems. Take, for instance, one of Moore's most famous poems, which actually has the title, "Poetry." The version that appears in this copy spreads over two pages. By 1967, Moore had reduced it to only four lines. Readers could be forgiven, however, for thinking it is the original version; the table of contents of "The Complete Poems of Marianne Moore," says only that "Poetry" appeared in "Selected Poems" in 1935, as if what appeared in the 1967 volume is the original. Of course, the 48 poems in "Selected Poems" are a pleasure to read in their own right, apart from any scholarly importance. They incorporate the concise, precise language she was known for which still managed to describe much. William Carlos Williams said she wrote, "So that in looking at some apparently small object, one feels the swirl of great events." The introduction by T.S. Eliot is worth a read as an independent essay, too. He gives a good analysis of what makes Modernist poetry, and its subset, Imagism, what they are. (Moore was tangentially connected to Imagism in her early days. Her first book, "Poems," was published by leading Imagist H.D. [Hilda Doolittle] without Moore's knowledge.) But it is Eliot's firm statement about the quality-and indeed, the value-of Moore's work that is so frequently mentioned when she is written about: "Miss Moore's poems form part of the small body of durable poetry written in our time.in which an original sensibility and alert intelligence and deep feeling have been engaged in maintaining the life of the English language." Is it any wonder that Moore and Eliot remained lifelong friends? Near fine in a good dust jacket. Lovely green cloth binding remains bright, as does the silver lettering on the front cover and spine. Binding tight and square. Previous owner's name appears on the front pastedown, and a small bookseller label from the Grolier Book shop is affixed to the lower edge of the first free endpaper. (Grolier's is the oldest bookstore in the US dedicated to poetry.) Light soiling and mild fading are present along the edges of the boards, with slight bumping at the upper corners but no loss to the cloth. Mild age toning to the interior; no foxing noted. Original dust jacket survives with expected wear. A two-inch tear is present between the front panel and flap, with an additional one-inch tear below. The front panel is cleanly separated from the jacket's spine and has been price-clipped. Additional rubbing and soiling appear on the rear panel, along with another one-inch tear. Overall, a well-preserved and increasingly uncommon 1935 volume, retaining its original dust jacket despite evident wear. …
