Op grond van feitelijke gegevens, hier en daar doorweven met…fictionele gesprekken, schetst zij het beeld dat in die tijd van de noordelijke gebieden bestond.Men wist dat het er koud was. Boven Ijsland hing, zei men, een dichte mist waar men langzaam in stikte. Nog noordelijker was de Zuigende Zee. Schepen die daarin terecht kwamen, werden met grote snelheid weggezogen naar het binnenste van de aarde, of bleven hangen bij de magneetberg, ??n brok glanzende zwarte steen van drie?ndertig mijl in omtrek.Alles wees erop dat dit het rijk van de duivel was: de toverkunsten van de Lappen, het gekreun van de zielen in het vagevuur en de gruwelijke volken die het noorden van Rusland bewoonden. Maar volgens sommigen was het ook de plaats van het aardse paradijs.Wat er ook van waar was, in elk geval moest het mogelijk zijn langs die weg de andere kant van de wereld te bereiken. Hetzij via Nova Zembla, hetzij langs de eilanden Frisland, Grisland, Ijsland en Icaria in het westen. De tientallen kaarten en illustraties in Bij noorden om laten zien over welke geografische kennis Olivier Brunei kon beschikken toen hij in 1584 de haven van Enkhuizen verliet om koers te zetten naar de monding van de Ob' in het noorden van Rusland.
