First edition. Large 4to. Grey cloth with silver lettering and multicolored coat-of-arms decoration on front board. Very good condition, foxing spots in cloth of front cover and on fixed and free endpapers, top of spine little frayed, lower right corner of front board bumped. Photographs of the "city of light" in the main by Mario von Bucovich, with numerous others credited to Germaine Krull and a couple from other sources. In the series Die Gesicht der Städte, edited by Carl Otto Justh. Bucovich went into exile in the 1930s and eventually settled in Mexico, where he died. He has been described as ''eine[r] der großen Unbekannten der europäischen Fotografie des 20. Jahrhunderts" (one of the great unknowns of European photography of the 20th century). Large and heavy book, foreign orders must be sent by Priority Mail with significant extra charges thereto, this book is priced advantageously for domestic US customers.

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Soft Cover, Wire Binding. Book Condition: Very Good. Mario Bucovich Photos (illustrator). First Edition. 12 x 9 Inches. Bucovich's pre-WW II B/W photographs of Manhattan landmark buildings and city views. Presented in 85 captioned, mostly full page sheet-fed gravure reproductions. Dr. D.J.Ruzicka is credited on 13 of the images. Overall a Very Good copy with images in Near Fine (at least) condition. Externally, the front cover is rubbed and the periphery edges show some pigment loss especially along the front edge. There are no tears but some chipping of the edges. Otherwise the covers and pages are firmly attached to the wire binding. In addition there are two inserts. One is a small yellow advertisement from the photographer's publisher (I think he may have had his own publishing house?) and the other is a double-sided list of the photographs in the book with their technical data. A real nice extra. This one would be a jewel in anyone's collection.

From the series "Das Gesicht der Städte" edited by C. O. Justh. In the preface renowned German writer Alfred Döblin points to the fact that Berlin is a not a city that was systematically designed but a conglomerate of architectural 'presents' kings and other entrepreneurs left behind, castles, museums, Sanssouci, etc., not to be compared to Paris, a colorful, glistening and loud city, but an un-poetic, hardly colorful but true city. Illustrated with 256 beautiful b/w photographs of famous sights as well as mundane architecture and everyday life. Binding slightly rubbed. Very light foxing on endpapers. Binding in overall good+ to very good, interior in very good condition.
