Ex-Library set with presentation bookplates to front paste downs and library stickers to free front end papers, no other library markings or any other inscriptions. They have been rebound with cloth spines and gilt titles to spin…es and new cloth to boards, Boards are in very good order with very little wear. Internally they are in surprisingly good order apart from marks already mentioned and some periodic light spotting which is mostly to end papers. Page edges are rough cut and the text is generally clean and bright with no damage, no loose pages, no turned over corners etc. Happy to supply photos on request. Overall a nice condition set of scarce volumes. Heavy set which will require additional postage outside the UK.

Mr. Bedford' that Thorpe is 'very conversant with Archaeological matters', and asks whether he has 'met with a Seal fo Abp. Cranmer'. Gorham is 'getting drawings of four of his Seals, for probable publication'. Bedford 'thinks there… is a drawing of one among the Ashmole MSS.' but Gorham does not remember seeing one there. He hopes to 'have 2 or 3 hours in Oxford on Monday, & will look for it'. As he will be 'very much hurried' he asks Thorpe to 'look at the Ashmole Catalogue - & to inform me by a note at the Mitre Tavern of the result. I hope to reach Oxford at 12.55 on Monday.' Gorham was subject of a bitter controversy with Henry Phillpotts, Bishop of Exeter, which resulted in what the ODNB calls 'one of the most celebrated legal actions of the century'.
