Während dabei hauptsächlich der amerikanische Spielfilm im Zentrum der wissenschaftlichen Analysen stand, sind deutsche Filmproduktionen bislang nur kaum erforscht. Die Dissertation nimmt sich dieser Forschungslücke an und erarbeitet anhand des "ersten deutschen Hip Hop-Films" (Till Hastreiters Status YO! aus dem Jahre 2004), ein wissenschaftliches Modell, mithilfe dessen sich der Film sowohl in Hinblick auf filmästhetische und erzählerische Aspekte untersuchen als auch in Beziehung zu (sub-)kulturellen Vorstellungen, Werten und Ordnungssystemen des Hip Hop setzen lässt. Im Zuge der Arbeit wird ebenso eine zweite Forschungslücke thematisiert und problematisiert: Die Frage danach, wie, ob und auf welcher Basis sich Hip Hop-Kultur und die entsprechenden Filmproduktionen überhaupt definieren und analysieren lassen. Damit reiht sich die Arbeit in eine wissenschaftstheoretische Tradition ein und bezieht sich ebenso auf die in den Medienwissenschaften gegenwärtig geführte Diskussion um die Frage nach der Produktion von Wissen durch Medien. 247 Seiten, broschiert (Schüren Verlag 2016).
