Brigadier General Samuel Lyman Atwood Marshall, also known as SLAM, (July 18, 1900 December 17, 1977) was a military journalist and historian. He served with the American Expeditionary Fo…rces in WWI. In 1940, he published Blitzkrieg: Armies on Wheels, an analysis of the tactics used by the Wehrmacht. He reentered the U.S. Army as its chief combat historian during World War II and the Korean War. He retired in 1960 and served as an advisor/historian during the Vietnam War. Marshall wrote over 30 books, including Pork Chop Hill: The American Fighting Man in Action, and co-authored with David Hackworth The Vietnam Primer. His famous work was Men Against Fire: The Problem of Battle Command, claimed fewer than 25% of men in combat fired at the enemy. His conclusion that many soldiers do not fire their weapons in combat has been verified by studies performed by other armies. General Marshall describes what men have done and what men can do in battle. He brings out that battles are won not just because of the operational skill of our side, but also because of what the enemy does. The contents of this work includes: By way of Prelude; Darkness at Dong Tre; The View from the High level; Into the Valley; The Charge; On Hill 258; A Romp in the Sun; Try, try again; A Rare Day in June; Plums to Plummer; The Cauldron; Hoa Hoi, The Third Battle; A Study in Command; and By Way of Postlude. In June and October of 1966 the First Cavalry Decision (air mobile) fought two campaigns in the Vietnam War--Operation Nathan Hale and Operating Thayer-Irving. Each is remarkable as an example of the day-by-day combat United States forces have experienced in Vietnam. Together they characterize the war in microcosm. A guerrilla attack from three hills northeast of the Special Forces camp at Dong Tre began Operation Nathan Hale, a series of battles fought for nameless ridges and nearly deserted villages. The Viet Cong excelled at fighting in the extreme heat an and through the rank Elephant grass. The air cavalrymen and paratroopers--PFCs, noncoms, and officers--became veteran fighters overnight in a war in which the enemy is virtually invisible, even when dead, graves having been carefully dug beforehand. Hoa Hoi, the locus of Operation Thayer-Irving, is a dead-end village some twelve hundred meters inland from the South China Sea and just a short walk east of Highway No. 1. Here too the fighting was from ambush, or from caves dug under water. Yet, despite almost impossible conditions, at the finish of the campaign the division, one way or another, had eliminated more than a thousand of the enemy. Mark Lennox (Field Sketches), and S. L. A.
