Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. 4to (198 x 141mm). [8], 514pp. only, [1], (paginated 1-402, 433-514 (lacking leaves signed Cc2-Dd8, before index). Woodcut device to final verso and chapter endings. Text in double column. Contemporary limp vellum with remnants of ties, ms. title to spine; (some light dampstains,…marginal worming affecting some text). First Edition. Of utmost rarity, an important collection of Portuguese sermons from the 17th century. Portuguese sermons tend to be quite formulaic in format, tone and content. Each sermon begins with a biblical quote and quickly develops into a strong anti-Jewish message, often delivered in a searing second person oratory as if chiding the penitents themselves. The efforts made to print these sermons (which often appeared within weeks of their original delivery) seem to indicate a special zeal on the part of the Portuguese Church to promote anti-Jewish arguments among the people. Not only were such sermons to be read at mass gatherings, they were made available for repeat consultations by a primary audience of priests and theologians who might in turn utilize the sermons' ideas and authorities in their own work. Rare work important for not only analyzing doctrinal content of the sermons but also to develop a sense of discourse during the time of the Inquisition.

None. Condizione: Very Good. Watercolour ca. 19 x 28 cm (8 x 11.5 in.) Grey wash on paper, mounted on an album leaf with double borders ruled in ink, manuscript caption title. Overall a very good watercolour. This early attractive well-executed watercolour by an anonymous French voyager shows an island of the Martim Vaz Archipel…ago with a ship's launch at sea in the foreground. "Trindade and Martim Vaz is an archipelago located about 1,200 kilometers (740 mi) east of Vitória in the Southern Atlantic Ocean, belonging to the State of Espírito Santo, Southeast Brazil. The archipelago consists of five islands and several rocks and stacks; Trindade is the largest island. The islands are of volcanic origin and have rugged terrain. They are largely barren, except for the southern part of Trindade. They were discovered in 1502 by Portuguese explorer Estêvão da Gama and stayed Portuguese until they became part of Brazil at its independence. From 1890 to 1896, Trindade was occupied by the United Kingdom until an agreement with Brazil was reached. During the period of British occupation, Trindade was known as "South Trinidad"(Wikipedia).
