In this new collection of his writings and broadcasts Martin Cooper, who is well known as a stimulating and perceptive writer on music, covers a wide ground. His principal themes are music, poetry and philosophy as they affected each other in the first half of the nineteenth century - and so by the side of Beethoven, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Weber, Schumann and Meyerbeer stand the poets Leopardi, Eichendorff and Morike. A study of the German aphorist Lichtenberg, hardly known in this country, leads naturally to an essay on Schopenhauer, which in its turn introduces Nietzsche and the problems of Wagnerian interpretation examined from three different angles - the political, the Jungian and the Christian. Of specifically Christian interest are the essays devoted to Fenelon and to Friedrich von Hugel, as masters of the spiritual life, while the two essays on Scriabin set this strange and little-known composer against the background of the Russian spiritual renaissance of the early 1900s. The musical crisis in Western Europe at the same period is shrewdly examined, and there are more general essays on the nature of taste and the problems of familiarity - subjects on which Mr. Cooper, who has been a London music critic for nearly 20 years, has had excellent opportunity to form an opinion. jacket design by Gerard Macdonald.
