Hardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A good copy of the extremely scarce 1st edition of Hugh Marwick's study of the Orkney Norn language. Dr Marwick studied Norn as his D Litt, receiving a grant from the Carnegie Trust to support his study. This work remains one of the few on the Norn language. This copy is in the original blue cloth binding with gilt titles to spine. Unfortunately the binding has been preserved by covering it in adhesive clear film. On the positive side the binding is bright and clean and previous wear - pulling to spine ends with small split developing at the top, and corner wear with a bumped top corner to the back board - has not progressed. The spine is slightly cocked to the front. The film is secured at the pastedown endpapers where the edges have accumulated some dirt. The contents are complete, very clean and in very good condition. There is an ownership signature (A J Flett September 1957) to the top of the fep which has a couple of spots at the bottom. Page 232 and the rear free endpaper have foxing. Page 230 has a small reddened area in the bottom margin. Bottom page edges are uneven lengths.
