XX [From the introduction] "Woven fabrics have a known history stretching back over thousands of years. The earliest textile production was undoubtedly functional, and fabrics were woven to serve practical ends. However, the medium is supple and seems to have offered a means of aesthetic expression since early times. After centuries of experimentation, we are left today with a broad range of textile techniques limited only by the inherent nature of the weaving process and the variety of raw materials. As a result, there has developed an almost endless array of textile variations: some very simple, others greatly elaborated. Of these latter, the textiles of native Guatemala hold interest to scholar and layman alike; They are strikingly colorful and show a remarkable range of design technique. In undertaking the production of this catalog, the Heard Museum has a threefold objective in mind: to provide a visual description of modern Guatemalan costumes; to provide a technical analysis of their construction; and to present a general overview of the Guatemalan people.
