A translation from the original French of two of the earliest eye-witness accounts of the Crusades: Villehardouin's chronicle of the 4th Crusade and the conquest of Constantinople, believed to have been written in the early 13th century; and de Joinville's account of the Crusa…de of St Lewis, written in 1309. Translated into English and with an introduction in this edition (a reprint 1911 of the 1st edition 1908) by Sir Frank Marzials. Hardback in overall good condition. Cover in crimson cloth, gold spine titles, worn & frayed on spine. Binding exposed after half-title page, slightly exposed on penultimate page, otherwise firm. Text (340 pp) very good. Annotated in pencil throughout by former owner. Dated (1917) inscription in ink on flyleaf; later owner's name in biro.

Publisher's purple cloth with gilt titles to spine, and gilt decoration to upper board. Brown end-papers. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Gently toned through…out with occasional light spotting. Hinges split, but still firm. Moderate general wear to cloth, and some toning to spine. Very good. The first appearance of all three supposedly lost 'Episodes' omitted from the original Orientalist novel, in an English translation with the original French following. Melville discovered the additional material amongst papers owned by the Duke of Hamilton while researching for a biography of Beckford.
