"Favoured by semi-arid and arid climate and by a long-term history of human settlement and land use, land degradation and desertification are today threatening large areas in the Mediterranean. The Iberian Peninsula in particular has during the outgoing century been subject to considerable land use changes inducing large-scale landscape modifications and often bringing about the triggering or intensification of degradation processes. Causing irreversible damage to the landscape, soil erosion by water has been proven to be the most severe degradation process in the Mediterranean belt. The documentation and investigation of geomorphological processes, of their development and their relationships with vegetation, soils, relief and climate gets to be the key for understanding and counteracting land degradation. Landdegradation und Desertifikation, begünstigt durch semi-aride und aride Klimaverhältnisse und eine jahrtausendelange Landnutzungsgeschichte, bedrohen weite Teile des Mittelmeerraums. Insbesondere Spanien unterlag in diesem Jahrhundert einem starken Landnutzungswandel, der großräumige Landschaftsveränderungen und oftmals die Auslösung oder Verstärkung von Degradationsprozessen mit sich bringt. Bodenerosion durch Wasser gilt als der wichtigste Degradationsprozeß im Mittelmeerraum und hat gleichzeitig die schwersten, da unumkehrbaren Folgen für die Landschaft. Die Erfassung und Erforschung der aktuellen Geomorphodynamik und ihren Zusammenhänge mit Vegetation, Boden, Relief und Klima wird zum Schlüssel für das Verständnis und die Vermeidung von Landschaftsdegradation. La degradación y la desertificación son una amenaza para gran parte del área mediterránea, debido a su clima árido y semi-árido, y al uso del suelo por el hombre desde tiempos prehistóricos. De forma muy especial la Peninsula Ibérica ha sufrido en el presente siglo importantes cambios en los usos del suelo, que llevan consigo grandes cambios paisajisticos y muchas veces son causa de, o al menos acentúan, los procesos de degradación. La erosión del suelo producida por el agua es la prueba tangible del proceso de degradación que sufre la área mediterránea. Para comprender los efectos de la degradación del suelo es necesario recopilar la información existente y llevar a cabo trabajos que nos permitan evaluar los procesos geomorfológicos que se desarrollan y las interrelaciones que se establecen con la vegetación, el suelo, el relieve y el clima.".
