Front board attached via cording only, very fragile. Edges of text-block painted red (Dulled). The first signature of text-block (title page to page 47) attached via one piece of cording only (at head), very fragile. Marbled front paste-down detached from board. Old-hand previous ownership signature found on front end-page. Front fly-leaf attached to half-title page only. Normal toning throughout text-block, some instances of finger-soiling or age-staining. Small patch of water or tea dampness staining found on top edge of detached plate (page 47). Water or tea dampness staining found on top corner of pages 240 - 270 and top edge of pages 320 to end of text-block. Binding is intact, but VERY FRAGILE. Nice candidate for restoration. Mémoires historiques sur la Louisiane: contenant ce qui y est arrivé de plus mémorable depuis l'année 1687 jusqu'à présent (Historical memoirs on Louisiana, including the most interesting events from 1687 to the present) is based on a manuscript text by soldier Jean-François-Benjamin Dumont de Montigny (1696 - 1760) that was completed in France in 1747. The work was compiled and edited by the Abbé Jean-Baptiste Le Mascrier (1697 - 1760) and published in Paris in 1753. Dumont's original manuscript is preserved in the Newberry Library in Chicago. It narrates the events of Dumont's life between 1715 and 1747, including his experiences in Louisiana from 1719 to 1737. The second section of the memoir (1687 - 1740) describes Louisiana, the establishment of the French, the death of Robert de La Salle (who named the territory of the Mississippi basin La Louisiane in honor of Louis XIV) and Native American practices and customs. Le Mascrier eliminated much of the sharpness and crudity of the original account, but the work remains a rich original source of ethnographic information about the Louisiana Native Americans, especially the Natchez. First edition of the "Historic Memoirs of Louisiana" important and early history of Louisiana, considered the first reliable account of the state, with much information on the Indians. The number of plates vary, this copy has more than others, that makes it extremely scarce. With five fort maps, one of the fort at New Orleans, and four fruit tree plates, and the fine folding map "Carte de la Louisiane" (by Chambon), that shows the French territories prior to the French and Indian War, many forts (e.g. Illinois, Natchez, Fort St. Pierre Yazoo, Fort Rosalie, S. Francois, Mobile, Fort des Alibamons, Pensacole) and early settlements (e.g. New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Biloxi, Paskagoula). The first volume describes the natural history of Louisiana, its climate, natural products, flora and fauna, and the customs, origins and religion of the indigenous Indians. The second volume concerns with the history of the state from 1687, the establishment of the French in the province, until 1740, the death of Robert de La Salle who named the territory of the Mississippi basin "La Louisiane" in honour of Louis XIV and claimed it for France. Some authorities erroneously attributed the book to Georges-Marie Butel-Dumont (17251788). It was actually edited by Abbé Jean Baptiste de Mascrier (16971760), loosely based on the manuscripts that Jean-François Benjamin Dumont de Montigny (16961760), a colonial engineering officer and farmer in French Louisiana, had written about his experiences in Louisiana. L'ouvrage est une mine de renseignements pour l'Egypte à cette époque, même si Maillet, ne fut pas, semble t-il, très satisfait du travail de l'abbé.
