Aggiungi al carrello4to. [12 pp (unpagainted).], colour-illustrated titles, head-piece border vignettes, text illustrations throughout. Self-printed colour-illustrated softcovers, w/ image of a 1910-1911 Maytag-Mason Light Delivery commercial car on front cover (crease folds from original mailing, pencil MS annotations on back cover, very minor shelfwear), still a VG bright copy. First edition of this scarce catalogue representing one of Maytag's side forays into other business ventures, including an early attempt to produce commercial delivery vehicles, automobiles, and light trucks for both businesses and consumers from 1910-1911. In 1909, the Maytags who were producing washing machines and agricultural machinery bought controlling interest in Edward Mason's Des Moines, IA based Mason Automobile Company who was producing at the time a fairly popular Mason light delivery vehicle and several Mason automobiles. By 1910 the company had been moved to Waterloo, IA, where they introduced a new 32/35 4-cylinder touring model, along with the 24 horspeower 2-cylinder passenger cars, and commercial models, and by 1911 had introduced six different model cars. Company financing issues, sales distribution problems, and conflicts between the Maytags and Mason, forced the company back to mason by January, 1912, and then went bankrupt by 1915. Worldcat locates 2 similar copies (Newton, IA Pub. Lib. & Wolfsonian).…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - This volume describes a career in pharmacy spanning the age of botanical mixtures from the corner drug store to modern large-scale pharmaceutical manufacturing. The author was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1885, graduated from Yale's Sheffield Scientific School in 1904, and completed his Ph.D. in chemistry at Yale in 1908. As a student he clerked in retail drug stores, primarily one owned by his uncle, and became a licensed pharmacist. After finishing his Ph.D. he moved to Chicago, working at the U.S. Bureau of Chemistry which was just beginning to enforce the provisions of the Food and Drug Act of 1906. In 1913 he became the first chemist to work at the Upjohn Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was director of research at the Upjohn Company from the time when he was the sole member of the department to when it employed dozens of active researchers covering a wide range of investigations. He developed several nationally-known pharmaceutical products, such as Digitora, Citrocarbonate, Super D Cod Liver Oil, Adrenal Cortical Extract, Sex Hormones, and Germicides, whose histories are described in separate chapters. The book concludes with a description of the early manufacturing successes for penicillin, when multiple private firms in the U.S. developed penicillin from an unstable, difficult to manufacture drug to a mass-produced low-cost product whose adoption and widespread use was unprecedented.…
