His studio . propelled a number of Emilian artists to pre-eminence in Rome and elsewhere, and singularly helped encourage the so-called Bolognese School of the late 16th century, which included Reni, one of the authors of this work. Carracci had his apprentices draw studies focused on observation of nature and natural poses, and use a bold scale in drawing figures. Ludovico's pupils included Giacomo Cavedone, also included in the list of authors of this work., Size : folio (407x272mm)., Illustrated title with printer's device, head- and tailpieces, decorative initials, sixteen (16) full-page copper engravings, including one frontispiece, and four (4) oversized folding plates; depicting frescoes - mural paintings and decorations - painted by Ludovico Carracci and his entourage or artists at S. Michele in Bosco in the early 17th century, telling of the life of Saint Benedict. Each engraved plate is signed below with the name of its painter as well as by Giacopo Giovannini as its drawer and engraver: Britio (#1); Garbieri (#2,11); Guido Reni (#3-large folding, 15); Lod. Elle est importante non seulement pour les corrections et les annotations de l'humaniste de Sélestat mais aussi pour l'importante contribution à la philologie qu'est son épitre dédicatoire. Beatus Rhenanus y précise que les travaux de Massari sont basés sur ses voyages dans l'Adriatique et la Méditerranée et il y critique ouvertement l'approche méthodologique de l'auteur qui avait été l'élève d'Hermolano Barbaro. Barbaro lui-même élève de Gaza, donna plus d'importance à ses propres corrections qu'au texte initial en grec : inversant la méthode adoptée par son maitre pour la traduction d'Aristote, il proposait plus de 5 000 corrections aux textes de Pline dans ses Castigations Plinianae publiés en 1492. Beatus Rhenanus remarqua ce problème de méthodologie et le critiqua dans sa dédicace.On trouve relié en tête de ce précieux volume : ALTHAMER, Andreas. Commentaria Germaniae in P. Cornelii Taciti. Nuremberg, Johannes Petreius, 1536. In-4 de 24 ff.n.ch., 341 pp., 1 f.n.ch.Adams, T-48 ; BM, German, 848. Seconde édition (la première date de 1529) de l'important commentaire d'Althamer sur la description de la Germanie de Tacite. Elle est ornée d'un beau titre dans un encadrement gravé sur bois avec les portraits de Georg et Albrecht de Brandebourg, à qui ce traité est dédié. Provenance : Signature de Caspar (ou Gaspar) Zinnius au contre-plat, indiquant l'acquisition du livre à Strasbourg le 19 septembre 1556. Autre signature sur le titre de l'ouvrage d'Althamer : "Georgius Adamus Schochig". Annotations de mains différentes notamment au début du premier ouvrage.Très bel exemplaire fort bien conservé dans sa première reliure.
