The Pierogi Problem examines people's networks, places, material culture, and media to explain how Polish tastemakers embrace context-specific strategies to localize discourses, practices, and values amid an increasingly globalized food culture. The decades following the end of Poland's socialist regime were marked by a rising interest in foreign cuisines and Western forms of consumption. Today, however, ingredients, cooking techniques, and dishes that were once considered ordinary or part of the country's uncomfortable past are being refashioned to reflect transformations in cultural hierarchies. The Pierogi Problem chronicles how and why local, traditional, and artisanal foods are reemerging for changing cosmopolitan appetites.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. What do the fashionable food hot spots of Cape Town, Mumbai, Copenhagen, Rio de Janeiro, and Tel Aviv have in common? Despite all their differences, consumers in each major city are drawn to a similar atmosphere: rough wooden tables in postindustrial interiors lit by edison bulbs. There, they enjoy single-origin coffee, kombucha, and artisanal bread. This is 'Global Brooklyn,' a new transnational aesthetic regime of urban consumption. It may look shabby and improvised, but it is all carefully designed. It may romance the analog, but is made to be Instagrammed. It often references the New York borough, but is shaped by many networked locations where consumers participate in the global circulation of styles, flavors, practices, and values. This book follows this phenomenon across different world cities, arguing for a stronger appreciation of design and materialities in understanding food cultures. Attentive to local contexts, struggles, and identities, contributors explore the global mobility of aesthetic, ethical, and entrepreneurial projects, and how they materialize in everyday practices on the ground. They describe new connections among eating, drinking, design, and communication in order to give a clearer sense of the contemporary transformations of food cultures around the world.

This report is the culmination of a year-long research project carried out by the Popular Culture Research Center of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw for the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage under the leadership of Dr. Mirostaw Filiciak. The nine-person team of media studies experts, sociologists and anthropologists was tasked with illustrating the way in which new technologies are impacting the lives of young people in Poland. The project's key component was a two week period of ethnographic fieldwork carried out in August and September, during which researchers studied the lives of high school students in three Polish cities. During meetings, interviews, trips and parties, they met and spoke with 137 young people. The high school students showed the ethnographers their world and spoke about daily life in the era of digital media and networked communication. This report is structured around chapters which address key dimensions of these young people's daily lives: "Being Together," "Love," "Geeking Out," and "At School," as well as chapters which focus on analytical categories significant in understanding the cultural environment co-created by new media: "Intensity," "Technologies of Reflectivity," and "Sharing."
