This book explores the literary and intellectual culture of France from 699 to 1245, a period that witnessed both great advances and profound challenges for the development of the nation's arts and sciences. The author takes a comprehensive approach, examining the influence of religion, the evolution of the French language, and the contributions of key figures such as Charlemagne and Gerbert of Aurillac. The book argues that despite periods of decline and turmoil, French intellectual life during this era was marked by a persistent drive towards progress and innovation. By examining the intricate relationship between culture, politics, and society, this book sheds new light on the enduring legacy of medieval France and its profound impact on Western civilization. Due volumi di cm. 27, pp. (4) xiv, 624; (4) 688. Antiporta figurata a ciascun volume, 8 carte geografiche ripiegate, 20 ritratti e 117 tavole fuori testo raffiguranti luoghi geografici e scene storiche, il tutto inciso in rame.
