The plates are among the most beautiful ever produced in a book of this kind. They include the grotto of Egeria, the Temple of Vesta, the Temple of Fortuna Virilis, the Temple of Janus Quadrifrons, the Temple of Bacchus, the Tomb of Cecilia Metella, the Temple of Minerva Medica, the Temple of the Dea Tussis, the Pantheon, the Ponte Lugano, the Coliseum, the Forum of Nerva, the Arch of Titus, the Temple of Jupiter Tonans, Trajan's Column, the Tomb of Hadrian, the Pyramid of Caius Cestius, the Triumphal Arch of Septimus Severus, the Temple of Pallus, the Claudian Aqueduct, the Ponte Salaro, the Baths of Dioclesian, and the Triumphal Arch of Constantine. Abbey Travel 180. Tooley 188 (referring to a later edition). Binding with signs of use, a short closed tear at base, other signs of minor wear. Yellow FFEP chipped, with somewhat long closed tear. No FEP and no endpapers in rear. FFEP, last page, and title have film of dust soiling, as do the margins of some plates, most of which can be removed with an eraser, part of which we've done on the date of this listing. Light foxing throughout -- this is more permanent. A few shallow closed tears. Overall, this copy has a touch of grittiness and wear. With the illustrations themselves remaining quite vivid and fully intact, we regard the copy at least Good, but not quite Very Good. Limp leatherette (of card stock). Cloth spine.

unbound. Aquatint and etching with hand coloring. 9" x 11.5" sheet mounted to 10.5" x 14.5" sheet. Beautiful aquatint etching from Dubourg's "Views of The Remains of Ancient Buildings in Rome, and its Vicinity". The print depicts the Forum of Nerva in Rome, an ancient Roman structure that made up part of the Imperial fora. Dubourg shows the ruins from outside the eastern wall, with a view of Via Tor d'Conti surrounding the Arco dei Pantani. In his etching, the arch is still being used as an entrance to the forum. Several figures are seen along the road, some walking, socializing, resting, and one man on horseback. The figures emphasize the scale of the ruins, and Dubourg's use of light and shadows highlight the grandeur of the architecture. Behind the ancient columns within the forum is the campanile of the church Santa Maria Annunziata ai Monti, demolished in the early 20th century by Mussolini's regime.

Etching with aquatint and engraving with hand coloring in watercolor on watermarked J Whatman Turkey Mill 1843 paper with a gilded edge, 11 1/2 x 14 3/4 inches (290 x 374 mm), the full sheet. Significant edge wear including scattered losses which do not enter the image area. Significant toning, spots of adhesive residue from a former mount at each edge on the verso, as well as scattered fragments of nonarchival tape. Colors slighty attenuated. Plate No. 2 from Views of the Remains of Ancient Buildings in Rome and Its Vicinity. Printed c1844. The Temple of Vesta was tended by the six Vestal Virgins, drawn between the ages of 6 and 10 from freeborn, or traditionally, aristocratic families. They surrendered all legal connections with their birth family, and came under the authority of the pontifex maximus, Rome's chief priest. The Vestal oath of virginity during their 30-year tenure set them apart from other Roman women. While chastity until marriage was considered proper in Rome, long-term celibacy was not, as women were generally expected to marry, and give birth to heirs for their husbands. A Vestal who broke her vow of chastity during her priestly tenure disrupted the relationship between Rome and its gods. The Romans believed that this would lead to disaster, such as pestilence, social breakdown or military defeats.

In very good condition with extremely fresh and pleasant coloration. Plate No. 19 from Views of the Remains of Ancient Buildings in Rome and Its Vicinity. Printed 1844. The tomb of the Roman emperor Hadrian, also called Hadrian's mole, was erected on the right bank (or northern edge) of the Tiber, between 134 and 139 CE. Originally the mausoleum was a decorated cylinder, with a garden top and golden quadriga. Hadrian's ashes were placed here a year after his death in Baiae in 138 CE, together with those of his wife Sabina, and his first adopted son, Lucius Aelius, who died in 138CE. Following this, the remains of succeeding emperors were also put here, the last recorded deposition being Caracalla in 217 CE. The urns containing these ashes were probably placed in what is now known as the Treasury Room, deep within the building. Hadrian also built the Pons Aelius facing straight onto the mausoleum - it still provides a scenic approach from the center of Rome and the left bank of the Tiber, and is renowned for the Baroque additions of statues of angels holding aloft instruments of the Passion of Christ. The structure was once the tallest building in Rome.
