Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. First edition. London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1924. [8], 191 pages, including half-title. Original publisher's red cloth with black lettering. 17.5 x 13 cm. The spine is moderately sunned; some faint soiling to the cloth. The free endapers are tanned; a bit of light foxing to the first and last few leaves. The volume is slightly cocked, but sound. Good plus. Bookseller's ticket of The Holliday Bookshop, New York, on the rear pastedown. PROVENANCE: This copy from the library of Irma Liebmann Harris (1885-1969), with her engraved bookplate on the front pastedown. [Harris was a member of a prominent Jewish family from Atlanta, Georgia, and a leading figure in the city's social and cultural life. She was the daughter of Isaac Liebman, founder and president of the Atlanta Paper Company (18861924). In 1908, she married Arthur Israel Harris (18811963), who succeeded Liebman as president of the company (19241946) and later served as chairman (19471957). The firm pioneered wet-strength packaging vital to the U.S. military during World War II and secured major contracts with Coca-Cola and other beverage companies. Irma Harris was a civic leader, serving with the Girl Scouts, the Atlanta USO during World War II, Travelers Aid, the Atlanta Council of Jewish Women, and as founder and president of the Peachtree Garden Club. An avid art and book collector, she read extensively in French and German.] FIRST EDITION. This comedy was first performed in London in 1911. Originally written in 1902, it was also adapted into the novel, "The Bishop's Apron" (1906). The present volume is the first printing of the play in book form. Toole-Stott, "A Bibliography of the Works of W. Somerset Maugham," A32. The book was also issued and is more commonly found in printed wrappers.…

One of 1,500 numbered copies signed by Sloan on the limitation page at the back of Vol. II, this being number 629. Publisher's coarse tan linen, flecked with green and brown spots, with dark blue labels to spines lettered in gilt; in publisher's gray slipcase. Fine books; about fine slipcase, with some wear to top edge. Volume II with part of the original glassine wrapper, Volume I lacking wrapper. Overall, a handsome set. Stott A21. Of Human Bondage is a bildungsroman featuring the protagonist Philip Carey, a club-footed orphan who is raised by his religious aunt and uncle. From a young age, Carey yearns for adventure and moves to Paris to pursue a career in art. Subsequently, he moves to London to study medicine, where he meets the androgynous Mildred, with whom he begins a torturous love affair that will forever alter the course of his life. A strongly autobiographical novel (Maugham's formative source of shame was a stammer rather than a club foot), Of Human Bondage is considered Maugham's masterpiece. The book was adapted into three films in 1934, 1946, and 1964. The films starred Leslie Howard and Bette Davis, Paul Henreid and Eleanor Parker, and Laurence Harvey and Kim Novak as Philip and Mildred, respectively. John Sloan (1871 - 1951) was a painter and printmaker who was one of "The Eight" - a group of American painters who created raw and realistic scenes of America, and who exhibited together in February of 1908 - and the similarly minded Ashcan School. In his career, Sloan tended towards painting urban scenes, nudes, and landscapes. Sloan, John (illustratore). Signed by Artist.…
