Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a unique catalogue of the type specimens of echinoids, the diverse marine animals commonly known as sea urchins, sand dollars, and heart urchins that inhabit the worldâs oceans. These echinoids are housed at the renowned Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC, and the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The volume consolidates all of the type specimens described by the world-renowned echinologist Austin Hobart Clark and his contemporaries over a period of over 100 years, and includes revisions and updates of all taxonomic changes that have taken place during that time. It also features type specimens by other authors, making it a comprehensive resource for scholars. The work is illustrated and includes original descriptions of species and genera, locality information, and designation of primary type material for all echinoid species in the two institutions. The type specimens, which comprise the foundation for the valid names of all echinoid species, play a critical role in modern taxonomic studies, and this catalogue will be an invaluable resource for echinologists and zoologists worldwide. Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is a record of 293 nominal species and subspecies of ophiuroids housed in major collections in the United States. The author examined over 600 type specimens to provide corrections and designate lectotypes where necessary. This catalog is part of a projected series of five, one for each class of recent echinoderms. This book marks the second of the series, following the volume on the Asteroidea. It includes photographs and detailed descriptions of type specimens to aid researchers who wish to compare type material with specimens they collect. The catalog also includes information on the distribution of the species listed and provides insight into the historical and current research on ophiuroids.
