Interior text pages are bright, tight, and white. This is the 1945 Fourth Impression Edition. Theodor Herzl born in 1860 in Budapest, Hungary and died July 3, 1904. He was the founder of the political form of Zionism, a movement to establish a Jewish homeland. He organized a world congress of Zionists that met in Basel, Switzerland, in August 1897 and became first president of the World Zionist Organization, established by the congress. Although Herzl died more than 40 years before the establishment of the State of Israel, he was an indefatigable organizer, propagandist, and diplomat who had much to do with making Zionism into a political movement of worldwide significance. Some endpaper discoloration. Some board weakness. Alex Bein (January 1903 20 June 1988) was a German-Jewish historian and Zionist historiographer best known for his biography of Theodor Herzl. Bein was born in Steinach an der Saale in Bavaria, southern Germany. He immigrated to Jerusalem in 1933. He was director of the Central Zionist Archives and the first State Archivist of Israel. Bein died while on a visit to Stockholm. Maurice Samuel (February 8, 1895 May 4, 1972) was a Romanian-born British and American novelist, translator and lecturer of Jewish heritage. Bein was awarded the Israel Prize in 1987 for his contribution to Zionist historiography. Maurice Samuel (February 8, 1895 May 4, 1972) was a Romanian-born British and American novelist, translator and lecturer of Jewish heritage. Samuel emigrated to the United States, settling in New York City's Lower East Side. He served in the United States Army during World War I. A Jewish intellectual and writer, Samuel was known for his role as a polemicist and campaigner against anti-Semitism. Most of his work concerns itself with Judaism or the Jew's role in history and modern society. He and his work received acclaim within the Jewish community during his lifetime, including the 1944 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for his non-fiction work, The World of Sholom Aleichem. He received the Itzik Manger Prize for Yiddish literature posthumously in 1972. Theodor Herzl (2 May 1860 3 July 1904) was an Austro-Hungarian Jewish journalist and lawyer who was the father of modern political Zionism. Herzl formed the Zionist Organization and promoted Jewish immigration to Palestine in an effort to form a Jewish state. Due to his Zionist work, he is known in Hebrew as Chozeh HaMedinah, lit. 'Visionary of the State'. He is specifically mentioned in the Israeli Declaration of Independence and is officially referred to as "the spiritual father of the Jewish State". Herzl was born in Pest, then part of Kingdom of Hungary, to a prosperous Neolog Jewish family. After a brief legal career in Vienna, he became the Paris correspondent for the Viennese newspaper Neue Freie Presse. Confronted with antisemitic events in Vienna, he reached the conclusion that anti-Jewish sentiment would make Jewish assimilation impossible, and that the only solution for Jews was the establishment of a Jewish state. In 1896, Herzl published the pamphlet Der Judenstaat, in which he elaborated his visions of a Jewish homeland. His ideas attracted international attention and rapidly established Herzl as a major figure in the Jewish world. In 1897, Herzl convened the First Zionist Congress in Basel, Switzerland, and was elected president of the Zionist Organization. He began a series of diplomatic initiatives to build support for a Jewish state, appealing unsuccessfully to German emperor Wilhelm II and Ottoman sultan Abdul Hamid II. At the Sixth Zionist Congress in 1903, Herzl presented the Uganda Scheme, endorsed by Colonial Secretary Joseph Chamberlain on behalf of the British government. The proposal, which sought to create a temporary refuge for the Jews in British East Africa following the Kishinev pogrom, was met with strong opposition and ultimately rejected. Herzl died of a heart ailment in 1904 at the age of 44, and was buried in Vienna. In 1949, his remains were taken to Israel and reinterred on Mount Herzl. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. 4 p. l., 3-642, [2] p. 22 cm. With a large cast of characters, this is a social novel, a family saga set against the rise of capitalism and of a Jewish bourgeoisie in Lodz. It tells the story, through an interwoven plot, of the clash between old traditions and growing desires. Excellent story about the rise and fall of the Ashkenazi family, which covers different historical stages like the Industrial Revolution, rise of Capitalism and Communism, World War I, etc. But above all the novel deals with the issue of the nature of the Jewish identity, and it is here where it really succeeds. Singer enforces the fact that for every hardship endured, the Jewish community always ends up being the scapegoat. Israel Joshua Singer (November 30, 1893, Bi goraj, Poland-February 10, 1944 New York) was a Yiddish novelist. He was born Yisroel Yehoyshue (Yeshue) Zinger the son of Pinchas Mendl Zinger, a rabbi and author of rabbinic commentaries, and Basheva Zylberman. He was the brother of Nobel Prize-winning author Isaac Bashevis Singer and novelist Esther Kreitman. Singer contributed to the European Yiddish press from 1916, and in 1921 became a correspondent for the leading American Yiddish newspaper The Forward. His short story, Liuk, appeared in 1924, illuminating the ideological confusion of the Bolshevik Revolution. He wrote his first novel, Steel and Iron, in 1927. In 1934 he emigrated to the United States. He died in New York City in 1944. His memoir Of a World That is No More appeared posthumously in 1946. His other works include: Steel and Iron (1927) Yoshe Kalb (1932) The Brothers Ashkenazi (1937) The Family Carnovsky (1969). Good. No dust jacket. Previous owner's bookplate inside front cover. Cover has some wear and soiling. First edition. First edition stated. Presumed first printing.…
