Children's author Quail Hawkins was also a bookseller, and worked at Sather Gate bookshop in Berkeley for over 40 years. Hawkins hired a young Beverly Cleary in 1941 to assist with the Christmas rush at the bookshop, which along with her encouragement, led to Cleary's first book contract.
